Sahniya Dahal
Sahniya Dahal (née Patel) is the second oldest child of Raghesh and Ishvana Patel, and she embodies much of the fierce, no-nonsense attitude that her father instilled in his children. A widow, Sahniya carries the weight of personal loss with quiet strength—her husband was killed by an Umber Hulk during an ill-fated expedition into the deeper, more dangerous portions of The Underdark. This loss only strengthened her resolve, and since then, she has thrown herself into her work as a denizen of the deep, prowling the vast expanse of the Underdark with purpose. Whether hunting down threats to her family and clan, gathering rare fungi and plants for both medicinal and alchemical purposes, or simply seeking solace in solitude, Sahniya is most often found on the move. She has little interest in the day-to-day affairs of Caer Dolonav, preferring the peace of the wilds, where she can rely only on her instincts and the wilderness around her.
Her appearance, marked by numerous scars from her many skirmishes, reflects the life she has chosen. Her tusks, once whole and proud, are now chipped and broken, a reminder of the battles she has fought and survived. Her single eye, a stark amber, is sharp and observant, always on the lookout for any potential threat. The other side of her face is hidden beneath an eyepatch, the result of a deadly encounter with a ferocious creature— a deep, cave-dwelling basilisk that nearly claimed her life. Sahniya’s rugged appearance is matched by her demeanor. She has little time for politeness and no patience for anyone who doesn’t live up to the same high standards she sets for herself. To those unfamiliar with her family’s values, she can come across as brash, rude, and unnerving. In fact, some even call her “feral,” a term that she’s heard and dismissed many times.
Despite her solitary nature, Sahniya holds a deep sense of pride in her accomplishments, much like her father. She’s the first to take on any challenge and the last to give up, driven by a sense of duty to her family, her clan, and herself. Her pride is evident in the way she carries herself—confident, independent, and fiercely protective of those she loves. However, her lone-wolf mentality has left her somewhat disconnected from the social fabric of the Patel family. She comes and goes as she pleases, often returning to Caer Dolonav only when she needs to resupply or rest, before heading back into the dangerous depths. This tendency to disappear for long stretches of time only reinforces the perception of her as a mysterious and intimidating figure.
Sahniya’s relationship with her family is respectful but distant. While she shares her father’s stubbornness and work ethic, she lacks the nurturing warmth of her mother and the leadership qualities of her older sister, Vashira. Instead, she has carved out her own path, one that values independence, strength, and the quiet thrill of survival in a world that demands both. Though her connection to the clan may seem more functional than emotional, her loyalty to her family is unwavering. She is their protector in the Underdark, always ready to fight off whatever dangers may come from below, and though she is a woman of few words, her actions speak louder than any declaration of love or devotion could.
