Geography

Geography

Japan is a heavily mountainous region due to its presence on a major tectonic plate. This means that the available land for agriculture and settlements is very concentrated. For this reason there are many areas of Japan that are sparsely populated due to its mountainous terrain. Japan's vertical orientation also lends itself to a wide scope of climate types as well. Japan suffers from brutal natural disasters in the form of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and typhoons. The catastrophic events can occur as large calamities that steal tens of thousands of lives, but more often than not are frequent smaller scale local disturbances.
