Aergonda

It is said the ghosts that Aengreid made still haunt his hall, that the living who cross the threshold will become infected with his madness.

-Old Wives Tales

The Creation - 1473 M.A. (The Menobis Aeon, "The Forgotten Age")

After using the Ignis Talisa to create the Mirugaeri - magic-lacking people - to do his bidding, Aengreid Vorsnar prepared to make good on his vow to unite the Thirteen Provinces under his rule. With threats and warnings already issued against his plans, he set about creating a seat of power to fill his rivals with dread.   Drawing from the power of the Ignis Talisa, he raised up the land to create the Aergonda Plateau. Earthquakes rocked the continent for days as impenetrable cliffs jutted up at his command, creating a defensive height from which he could observe any foes' approach - and ensure that they in turn could march toward him from one side alone. With the plateau created, he then drew deep into the earth with the Ignis Talisa, drawing forth molten lava and forming a great citadel of obsidian. At the center he molded the Lehrort - "The Master's Keep".

The Aengreid Empire - 1389-1270 M.A.

Following his successful conquest of Kendaira in 1389 M.A., Aengreid's temperament and mental health deteriorated rapidly. By 1377 he began ordering his Mirugaeri to engage in duels to the death to satisfy his bloodlust. Each of the dead were then entombed within the catacombs beneath the Lehrort. Any who opposed his rules, enchanter or Mirugaeri, were summarily executed and entombed there over the next 100 years. The doors to the catacombs were sealed so that only a select few could gain access - a secret that has been lost over the centuries.

After the Empire's Fall - 1270 M.A.

When confronted by Graelden and cast down in the ensuing conflict, Aengreid's influence over Kendaira quickly faded as nation states arose and confronted each other. Several despots attempted to use the ruins as their seat of power, but all have found only misfortune and destruction for their efforts.   It is said that when the wind blows through chinks of obsidian, the Lehrort howls with the voices of victims from Aengreid's tyranny. As none have found the entrance to the catacombs, superstition and legends suggest that the dead wander the halls, hidden from sight in eternal torment.
