Mephit

Elemental Hybrids

Among the most notoriously confusing, yet intelligent species of elemental, mephits are so chaotic and misbehaved that even fey won't associate with them for very long. Small of stature, mephits usually stand 1-2 feet high and appear to be made of semi-solid, quasi-elemental matter - ice, mud, magma, and so on.

Common Elemental Types

There are many types of mephit, usually a combination of two 'core elements' called a 'hybrid element'. Their type often provides insight insto their personality and common behavior, although each mephit has their own identity and personality. General assumptions tend to be correct when dealing with the mischievious beings but some develop odd traits over time.

  Dust (Air & Earth)
Of all mephits, dust mephits are perhaps the most malicious by nature. The typical dust mephit appears as a small vortex of air filled with swirling sand, dirt, and other natural debris. When interacting non-violently with other creatures they'll often take the form of a wispy, insubstancial humanoid torso with vague hints of comparable anatomy despite lacking any actual physiological structure.
  Ice (Air & Water)
The least mutable of the mephits, ice mephits tend to be reclusive and keep to themselves even when it's not necessary.
Magma (Earth & Fire)   Mud (Earth & Water)
Even among mephits, the Mud Mephits are considered erratic, eccentric, and overall extremely difficult to predict. Composed of a malleable substance, these mephits are able to subtly shape their bodies in ways that can make them seem humorous, intimidating, or disgusting, should the desire strike them.

Mud mephits are most common in caves and underground where dirt and rock sit undesturbed with water for long periods of time. Some folk believe that their isolated locales are part of what makes them behave so oddly. Without belonging to a society or community of their own they lack understanding of what others find appropriate.
