Josille Ethnicity in Kaos Rhythm | World Anvil

Josille (joe-silly)

The josille, the so-called 'nameless' are the descendants of a caste of slaves from the early days of Stretto. Before humans learned better ways of working together, they would often subjugate each other. This was never more true than in the case of the Josille, an entire population segregated from society and born into generational slavery. Like most of those in Stretto the josille population has always been primarily human; the main difference being that no josille would ever judge someone else based on their outward appearance whereas the average citizens of Stretto would mostly shy away from any nonhuman.
As an oppressed caste of slaves the josille of antiquity no longer exists but their descendants are still one of the most persecuted minorities living within Allegran territory. Technically no longer slaves, their 'official' status as citizens of Stretto is in constant jeopardy, so-much-so that most josille are perpetually prepared for the day guards come to tell them they must leave. Many hope that's how it happens. Unlike many other civilizations, the wealthy population of Stretto vastly outnumbers the number of poor, which often results in a shortage of labourers and that's where the josille have found a way to survive.

Naming Traditions

Family names

As with many hidden or 'unseen' folk, the josille don't often use elaborate names. Since they have no official status with the government of the city they don't usually track family heritages closely, either. Among themselves the josille do have an unspoken tradition of always holding back someones' name around outsiders.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Nearly all josille live in Stretto slums and worship the primis deity of entropy, Dimira. She's a nihilistic powerhouse who promotes the acceptance of ones circumstance as a way forward, rather than a type of resignation. The josille have based huge portions of their culture on these religious practices. Based on virtues described in ancient writings credited to Dimira herself, their entire following consists of two houses of worship and no income or support requirements. The population being large as it is, the large buildings were designed entirely without government oversight and stand as a symbol of rebellion among the josille.

Shared customary codes and values

A common phrase among the josille is 'it is better to weather the storm than to shelter among the rocks'. They don't believe in any inherent value to suffering but when tough times come, you should face it head-on. They use a lot of weather imagery and metaphor in their quasi-religious philosophy towards their subjugation and the oppression of their forbears.
Without the burden of survival, the soul will always be pulled toward creation.
