Drálauka - The Wooden Augments

The Drálauka is a technology invented by the Kaalvgd family of the Wood Tribe under the supervision of Aeling Kaalvgd. They are body augments made of Drálm and powered by Nankaï, designed by, for and from the Trekijàrn. Indeed the essential part of these is Trekijàrn cells, as such they cannot be implanted on other species. Their purpose ranges from embellishment to almost providing immortality to providing new power. However such powerful and versatile technology isn't without a cost, either pecuniary or human.

Creation process

On the first stage the implants are living parts of a Trekijàrn body, often taken from their future owner and host for better compatibility. These masses of cells need an host to survive and grow, to avoid an ethic and moral disaster ersatz are used. Once the base is stabilized it is altered, mainly with Drálm and crystals, to fulfill its function but it is also carved and ornated with other materials for aesthetic purposes.

Implantation Process

To implant the Drálauka, one must first remove the part of the body to augment, then the augment is grafted in place of the removed part. Once grafted one has to wait for the graft to merge with the rest of the body. The process duration depends heavily on the relation between the implant and the host. Rejections are extremely rare when one's own body is used as a base for the implant but occur nonetheless. The graft completed the patient must wait for complete cicatrization before using the implant on a daily basis, avoiding as much as possible to strain it, otherwise it could lead to irremediable damage.

Limitations, hazards and side effects

These implants have some limitations and hazards which must be taken into account :
    • An implant mustn't be separated from its host before complete cicatrization, otherwise causing an irremediable loss of the removed body part and damaging the implant
    • Multiplicating implants can lead to malfunctions of the body
    • The torso and head can't be entirely grafted and as such must be altered by multiple grafts, they also are the hardest parts to graft
    • High densities of Nankaï can lead to malfunctions of the implants
    • Implants kept by an host for a long time often cause rejections when grafted to new hosts
    • Implants have a slower regenerative rate than the host's body
    • Highly damaged implants can loose their added functions
    • Rejected grafts must be removed, otherwise they will slowly rot and corrupt the host's body
    • Implants based on someone else's body can contain memories and knowledge, provoking strange dreams and reminiscences to their host
    • Implants based on someone else's body slightly alter their host's genes, changing their appearance among other things

Usage amongst Castes

The relation of the Trekijàrns to the implants highly depends on their caste. While the Eirstós can take all the time and money they want to alter their body piece by piece, the Ekkirtas and most of the Aefauns can't afford to loose so much time and money in operations and convalescences. So while the Eirstós avoid major problems by being plunged into an artificial coma until the end of the cicatrization and changing their body one part at a time, some often alter multiple parts of their body at once and others take the risk of straining their newly acquired implant. Likewise, the Eirstós mainly use implants to prolong their life, acquire beauty and power whilst the others use them to help them perform in their daily tasks and their jobs.

Imitation

The Ekkirtas first had to recover defective implants that were either rejected by their original host or not good enough for them. Such practices led to numerous rejections and malfunctions of those second-hand products that were often damaged by their temporary lack of host. But the Ekkirtas rapidly grew tired of the situation and decided to study these implants to develop and create their own. These new implants are cheaper in appearance and cost but almost as efficient as the original ones. Even better, this cheaper manufacture allows the graft to merge and cicatrize faster and more easily than the fancier models.
