Scots-in-exile; Highlanders

The British revolution had many impacts both local and international. Of these one of the nationalisation of the island's industries. Everyone knows of the shipyards, mines and factories, however the takeovers did not stop there. One industry that suffered from this more than others was the whisky distilleries. This ancient and honourable profession, as it may be referred too, has suffered greatly from the People's Government's attempts at equalisation and standardisation that have seen various attempts, mostly unsuccessful, to establish a truly egalitarian society by having all aspects of industry produce the same results. Consequently the distillery industry, which relies more than most on flair and imagination, have been as devastating as they were predicable. As the number of barrels in storage began to dwindle a desperate demand for Scotch Whisky saw prices of surviving stock soar. Even in the supposedly teetotal United States. Indeed for many around the world, the situation was desperate   However not all is lost. The revolution produced a flood of people leaving the country, whether as refugees or cowardly enemies of the people (it depends on who you ask). Amongst these were many from the Scottish highland population. A proud people who don't take well to being ordered around; the got on as well with the central government as they do with the midges; which is to say, not at all. As a result many have emigrated, mostly to the dominions, and with them they have brought their expertise, not only in moaning about the weather, but also in the art of whisky making. Although slow to start a decade after the revolution most of the dominions are now home to small but prosperous whisky industries. Satisfying a demand that was for some years unsatisfied as native whisky's became ever rarer in the years following collectivisation. Now these ventures provide a much needed boon to their local and national economies, especially in Canada and the Carribbean. Taking full advantage of the need to cure the US's prohibition hangover.   Although still in it's infancy by it's own standards the distillers of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other places are now well established and look as though they will go from strength to strength in the years to come. Though many long to return home and will fight when the time comes. Most will, for now at least, not complain about their finances or, just as importantly, the weather. To the relief of husband, wife, in-law and postman alike.
