Russia: It can only get worse
Petrograd; May 1936: Alexander Kerensky is a day away from his 55th birthday. He is happily married with two sons Oleg and Gleb; now grown up with families of their own. He lives with is wife at the Winter Palace in Petrograd in an apartment with charming views of the river Neva. He is also the most unfortunate man in Russia.
The "Acting" Head of the "Provisional" Government. Kerensky has held this position for nearly 16 years. Despite the euphoria of June 1920 and the defeat of the Reds, unity among the Whites collapsed as soon as the common enemy. Every attempt at reform has failed resulting in a paralysed government incapable of even the most simple and obvious initiatives or reforms. Not for lack of trying that is, everyone agrees that things need to change, there's only the sticking point of "how". A small word that has caused several problems; not a few calamities; multiple scandals; many a late night shouting match; a near equal number of voices irreparably damaged, sadly the egos made a full and vengeful recovery; and enough despair to make the voyage of the second pacific squadron look like a preferable alternative. Well almost. Indeed the only people that can be said to have truly prospered are the manufactures of headache pills. They're undoubtedly making a fortune, and have been for nearly 20 years. Bolshevik collectivisation not withstanding.
Admirals, Generals, Politicians, Diplomats, Professors, Lawyers, Chemists, Economists, Physicists, Teachers, Soldiers, Cobblers, Fishermen, Shopkeepers, Butchers, Bakers, Candlestick-makers, that good natured Babushka who sits in the corner of the square selling flowers who Kerensky's private secretary gets his button holes from, come to think of it Kerensky's secretary too, and his (the secretary's) wife , and his mother, and father, and brother, and sister, and daughter! and don't even get me started on the in-laws please sir! Oh and Kerensky's wife as well because; ehh why not, everyone else is doing it. All have great (and not so great) ideas for how to change Russia for the better. If only everyone would agree with them. Unfortunately they will not, and Alexander knows this full well, he's being trying to get the Russian Government, let's face it he doesn't stand a chance with the people, to agree on something (anything) and having as much success as an army in the Russian winter. Only most armies have one Russian winter and they're done. Kerensky has just endured his sixteenth in a job where it is his duty to take the blame and his pleasure to take the credit. If only there was credit to go to, well, anyone. So how has he lasted this long in such a thankless job? Not because he's brilliant at it but, rather, everyone in Russia, even the last of the Bolsheviks, knows better than to try for it.
For most people, a good day is one where they go to work, have a productive day, get paid, come home to their families, go out with their friends, and successfully avoid their mothers-in-law while walking through the market.
For Alexander, a good day is one in which: The ruble hasn't lost value in a week, there are less than six known conspiracies to end his life by the Bolsheviks "If they want my life so badly they can have my job! Don't tell them I said that Pyotr Nikolayevich." There are no bombings, shootings, stabbings etc, attempted or otherwise on anyone else in Russia. His office has received less that 400 letters detailing in no uncertain terms the senders' opinion (invariably negative) of himself, his attempted policies, his attempted reforms, his failure to deal with the Bolshies (the new term is Soviets) in Georgia, the marital status of his parents, or the paternity of his children; and lastly, but by no means the least, the list of Russians targeted for assassination by the Reds is less than 149, down from 151 in 1934. Such targets are always government and public officials, usually low and mid level, which in a country the size of Russia wouldn't be so bad if they would go for someone useless now and then, but they never do!
To cap it all of the Black Baron, second only in Russia to Kerensky in "power" though clearly ahead in brains, having gotten himself out of the to job just in time. Has requested a meeting to present lists of newly identified Bolshevik agents and targets, which he claims has one important difference from the others. Well, Kerensky thought. At least it would be something interesting to think about for a while. In any case, it's not like things could get much worse. Could they? (Of course they could.)
