Diarchy of Ireland

Born from the fires of the Weltkrieg. The modern county of Ireland is born of an ancient nation. Though hardly 20 years old Ireland has continued its tradition of troubled times and history. Initially the "Irish Free State" was created as a compromise settlement between the British Government and Irish rebels to end the Pentecost Rebellion at the Treaty of Drogheda. The Irish Free State formally came into existence on the 1st January 1917. Officially as a Commonwealth Realm comprising the 26 majority Catholic counties of Ireland. A fact that angered many of the more extreme nationalist and republican rebels, but which was accepted at the time by the leading rebels such as Michael Collins, Cathal Brugha, and Eamon de Valera. Who managed to convince, or threaten, most into accepting the treaty. However a small faction, the Anti-Treaty Irish Republican Army, would cause trouble for some years. Before being finally defeated in 1921.
World War 1917-20 Ireland initially remained involved in the World War then raging as part of its treaty obligations. However when British forces were almost entirely expelled from the continent after Operation Archangel the Irish government began to formally seek a peace with Germany. This infuriated the British Government and newspapers, however most in Ireland simply didn't give a damn what the times, Whitehall, or the daily mail thought. they were tired of a war who's causes were convoluted, justifications were slim, and participants seemed fanatical in fighting to the death. Immediately the offer of an unconditional peace was accepted by Emperor Charles of Austria and, under pressure from the Kaiser who had, by this point, lost control of government affairs to the the General Staff, it was also accepted by the German government in November of 1918. Although Irish soldiers and units in the British army proper continued to serve, The Irish Army was withdrawn from France to the island of Ireland. Bringing its only foreign excursion to an end.
  Post War 1921-25
  Revolution and Unification 1926-
The syndaclist revolutions of 1926 was a time of chaos, danger, and opportunity. When the United Kingdom collapsed the Irish government sensed an opportunity and, on the pretext of preventing a syndaclist uprising in the North, invaded the 6 counties of Ulster. With the British Government and its armed forces in exile the protestant majority of the North found themselves in what was, for them, a repulsive and terrifying position. Being a minority population in a catholic county. A prospect that had terrified them for three centuries had now come true and there would be no help coming soon. For they despised the new syndicalist government across the Irish sea as much as the Irish Government did. It was this fear that finally gave the Irish and British inhabitants of Ireland some common ground; and formed the basis of Irish efforts to formally integrate the North with the rest of Ireland.
It was also at this time that a new constitution was written for Ireland, one that makes it a republic with a president, amongst other things. However, it was decided that to force such a constitution unilaterally on Ulster was a good recipie for trouble, so now Ireland is that strangest of creatures. A Diarchy, a nation with two heads of state and two constitutions, albeit one unwritten. Approrpriate for a nation of two peoples.
Now, a decade later, Ulster has been reunited with all 9 counties sharing some from of limited self-government based in Stormont. In the years since the Unification this arrangement means that the protestant population is now a minority in Ulster province. However with no palatable alternative nearby they have accepted this for now.
