Sarathael, the Watcher of Roads (sah-RAH-thay-ell)
While no god, even among the Monarchs, is master of life and death, Sarathael is the patron of the unending cycle between them.
Sarathael's Doctrine
Sarathael receives much love and opposition from those on the material plane. He is difficult to understand, and therefore difficult to worship, but most who do are well cared for. He grants power very freely, and his clerics are plentiful; because of this, however, meeting a distinctly powerful cleric of Sarathael is extremely rare. He is a god full of paradoxes; he teaches patience, because all things change, but in the same breath he teaches that change can be expedited. The most essential part of his governance is that the cycle of life and death is one that can be walked in either direction, and as long as it is in motion, it's balanced. Death is permanent and inevitable. Undeath is natural and temporary. Life is sacred and ever-changing. These things must always be true, and Sarathael keeps many clerics with the expectation that each one will keep a different part of the cycle, knowing how difficult it can be to follow all three of them in motion together. The Ever-Winding Roads
Sarathael is a Monarch, and thus cannot leave the Pillar of Paths, but his responsibilities are still vast. While it cannot be entirely understood by mortals what his work is, most people believe that his responsibilities, much like Ves thel Án's, were not chosen, but imparted upon him by Ashnwara in the Exodus. He has never offered an explanation, but it's generally understood that he is not a harbinger of life and death. Rather, he is the caretaker of the cycle between them, keeping in tact that life, death, and everything in between can both exist and stay mostly in balance. He is also often invoked in more metaphorical representations of his domain, such as crossroads, and sometimes people looking for help in choosing a new road, however literal that may be, will call upon him for guidance.Tied by Duty
Sarathael and Ves thel Án's connection is not well understood. Their responsibilities are similar, being that they are the only two who are caretakers, each watching their own aspect of existence bestowed upon them by Ashnwara, ostensibly without explanation. They are called siblings by their own words, but it's unknown whether this was a relationship they were created with or if they forged it after the Exodus.
