Cadence, the Song of Madness (CAY-dense)
"'You are very unhelpful!' He turned back to his materials. 'I heard a song. I can’t remember the melody, but I know what instrument it was played on.'
'You’re a luthier?” I said.
'I have to be.' There was a touch of urgency in his voice. 'I can’t remember the melody.'"
The Song of Madness is a ghost story: the possibility of insanity without notice or protection. The destruction she inflicts is rare, but impossible to ignore when she does find a victim.
Cadence's Doctrine
If there is anyone who has spoken to Cadence long enough to glean what she could want from a follower, nobody has spoken about it. It's generally said that she doesn't have followers, given her proclivity for seemingly random devastation, but this is likely deterrent propaganda, or perhaps simply wishful thinking.
A Lesson, A Threat
It is said that The Song of Madness flits through Kairos as little more than a voice on the wind, humming a tune that mortals long to follow but cannot bear to hear. This has become a common fairytale on Kairos, serving to scare children out of letting their curiosity get the best of them. The truth behind the tale isn't entirely understood. Cadence's name is most commonly heard after tragedies, when desperate defendants claim to have followed a song in the forest and woken up hours later, unaware of their lost time. This refute rarely works; even if it is true, it's difficult to believe that this can be the effect of Cadence's voice when there are harrowing examples of people found among mangled bodies, carving instruments from the flesh and bone of people they once loved, babbling senselessly about trying to find a melody they can no longer hear. It's completely unknown what her motivations are and why she chooses what victims she does. As far as anyone knows, the insanity could be the result of reaching for her, looking for something, but nobody actually knows, as the few people who have clearly heard her voice can't make enough sense to glean any useful information.
