Shattering Speech

Shattering Speech, also known as Pre-Common, is the language used in documents that pre date the Shattering. Historians have determined from the few available written documents containing this language, that Shattering Speech must have had the same purpose as Common has nowadays.

Lost in time

Shattering Speech, or rather Saman as it was called back before the Shattering, is the oldest language currently known to men. It is only ever found in a written form in old documents that have been dated as pre-Shattering.   The oldest dated document is the Zenith Scroll which is found in the City of Graves. At first historians thought the Zenith Scroll was written in a local language as that was the only known document with that language for a long time, but later they found documents in other ruins scattered across Kaigan written in the same language. This lead to the current believe that Saman was once the common language across all of Kaigan.

Unreadable

The biggest problem for historians is that there is nobody who can read Saman. They have made guesses to the content of pieces like the Zenith Scroll based on the location, structure and some words that have been identified, but that is not enough to understand what is actually written.   This is mainly due to the differences between Saman and any known language that is currently used in Kaigan. Both the script as well as the sentence structure and grammar are different, making the translation process mostly guess work instead of understanding.

Notable work

Besides the Zenith Scroll that was found in the City of Graves, there are about four other documents found that are written in Saman. Two of these were also found in the City of Graves, one comes from Rasvich and the last one was found in a small ruined structure in the Savage Divide.

I like this article! I always find it interesting when a language is lost and no one can read it, especially when it used to be a common language. Great article! :)

Thanks! It was mainly a way to write a language article without having to come up with a full language as that is crazy difficult :)

No kidding! I didn't come up with a full language either, because I've tried that in the past, and it's so difficult. :)
