Mora Military Formation in Judge of Mystics | World Anvil

Mora

Formed from the ancient Spartan Mora (Regiment), the Mora of Kopis Industries are the flagship and elite infantry shock troops of Ares Mars Olympia and spouse Leonidas Olympia. There are six Morai in Kopis Industries Infantry, with Auxiliary troops, engineers, and air support provided by Romanesque style Legions.
"That's a lot of soldiers. How do they all find things to do?"
Karisma Calebdottir
Are you asking how Ares, the Olympian of War finds places of conflict to send troops to in Midgard, because you're naive to the amount of infighting with your human half-kin, or because you think Ares wouldn't enjoy spending the time training? These are the most elite warriors Ares has under his command. They keep busy.
"Huh. Guess we all gotta have hobbies, right?"
Karisma Calebdottir
Hob... Hobbies! The day you start combat training, I want you to prop me up on my tripod so I can watch and see you call it a hobby!
"Uh, sure, eyeless one. Suuure... can't be that bad... I bet Dad could take them."
Karisma Calebdottir
Caleb! She's ruining my entry on the Morai!
"Kari, give Book a break or read something else... and... thanks for the faith kiddo, but each Hoplite is a whole other level of elite. They're true believers in Ares, chosen from the most decorated soldiers in all Midgard. I might be trained, and spent enough of my fair share in combat, but these soldiers live to be Hoplites. I'd wonder if they're not the best trained forces in all the Realms."
Caleb Mauthisen
"Oh, like Leander and Leonidas Olympia? They're kinda terrifying when they're in grr-arr-rawr mode, I'm glad they're usually on our side... I still think you could take them, though."
Karisma Calebdottir
"Love you too, kiddo... never piss off the Hoplites."
Caleb Mauthisen
"Yyyyep! Not on my list of things to try."

Composition

Manpower

Equipment

Each Spartan carries a panoply. While their armour and weaponry are a wealth of technological advancement since bronze and steel, the crux of what composes their panoply has not changed.

Shield

Armour

  • HUD Helmet
  • Cuirass, greaves & armour plates
  • Protective weave under armour

Weapons

  • Kopis
  • Telescoping Spear

Weaponry

One part peace offering, one part pride, every Hoplite receives a Kopis and Aspis forged directly by Hephaestus Vulcan Olympia. The telescoping spear all Hoplites carry is another Hephaestus original, created when he and his brother made up after centuries of anger and ill will.

After the advent of firearms, one might think the Morai followed suit, as their ancestors did after a few strategic losses to Athenian archers. One might also think the sky is yellow, it doesn't make that an accurate statement. While capable of marksmanship, the Morai continue to focus on closer combat. Thus, their Kopis, Aspis & spears get far more practice.

Vehicles

  • 64 APC's

Structure

Command

Polemarch

The Mora is commanded by the Polemarch, who commands the 4 Lochagos, 8 Pentekonter and 16 Enomotarch within the Mora's command structure.

Obedience is absolute, only vetoed by orders direct from Ares, Strategos Leonidas, Aphrodite or one of the Areosides.

Tactics

Eschewing firearms to the Legions, the Hoplites of the Morai focus purely on hand to hand & phalanx-type shield wall configurations. While each Hoplite knows how to fire a myriad of projectile weapons, the lot of them view close quarters combat as a more effective level of worship to their deity.

The shock and awe of seeing heavily armoured Hoplites in formation of varying size rushing through bullets making contact with their shields and body armour with seemingly no effect but to anger them is, by itself, a form of battlefield intimidation. While it remains odd for many to conceive of, such tactics make more sense when one considers the Morai of Kopis Industries were maintained one as dedicated warriors loyal to Ares, but two, as personal companions to Ares and Aphrodite's sons Deimos Areides & Phobos Areides

Anyone who chooses to bunk down with the Olympian personifications of terror and panic is by character likely either brave, supremely stupid, insane, or a mixture of all of the above.

Training

Historical documents from the ancient Hellene world, state one pervasive thought when it comes to classical Spartan training: war was easier than the Agoge. When one lived inside training so intense the battlefield was less chaotic and trying, one could understand a little of the lengths Ares went to get his sons friends

Hoplites in their Enomotia train daily in gruelling and varied ways, given reprieve only when their commanders feel enough's enough.

And while they train to a religious degree, to a soldier, they usually also party as fervently.

When asked why he insisted the Morai train so hard, Ares motioned only to the historical accounts of those unprepared to handle the chaos of the battlefield the moment Deimos or Phobos entered the fray.

Logistics

Auxilia

Legionary Cohorts serve the Morai as Auxilia.

Recruitment

Only those proven in battle, who dedicate their lives to combat, pugilism & the worship of Ares are considered for the Hoplites of the Morai. Taken from throughout Midgard and the Realms, any demographic, sexuality or gender is a potential for the Morai as long as they can keep up with the intense training & expectations.

Those who become Hoplites are by definition, elite prior to their first training, and become more capable with time. Or, they injure out and are placed as honoured members of the Kopis Legions.

History

Descended from the legendary Morai of historical Greece's Sparta, the Mora of Kopis Industries are both homage and love song to the Spartans. A legacy and gift, Ares continued the training of Spartan Hoplites (modified by time), as an honour to his once and future lover Leonidas I.

Historical loyalties

There are no more fanatic devoted to Ares Mars Olympia and Leonidas Olympia than the Morai.
