Varn Mountains
"Careful in the mountains, lad. All manner o' beastie's. Swams o' purple worm babies, roc fledgelings, and any number o' creepy crawlies hidin' in crevices just outta sight... O' course, for a price, I can guide yee safely through!"
- Kazzuk Trollsbane, wandering Dwarven tradesmen.
Geography
A firm separation between Dreyla and the Iridescent Sea is created by the Varn Mountains, which runs along the northeastern shores of Dreyla. Extending from the Maghi Woods in the furthest north to the southern Ivory Peaks, making it the longest uninterrupted mountain range within Dreyla. Additionally, the Varn Mountains not only serve as a hotbed for both natural resources and dangerous monsters alike; it is home to the the proud Dolorian Dwarves of Varn Dolarr, who have carved their nation into the very heart of the mountain.
Ecosystem
The Varn Mountains are a vast and sprawling range known for their steep drops, numerous caves, constant landslides, and deadly denizens. With none but the hardest of plants growing past its base, the ecosystem of these mountains is not built upon the back of plants and herbivores but instead with meat, ore, and predators, with most avoiding travel on the ground, instead either taking to the skies, crawling along its steep faces, hiding in its caves, or digging through the mountain itself. And should one dare venture into its twisting and turning maze of caves and caverns, rest and respite are all but guaranteed. Numerous hungry beasts and insectoids have established their home in these dank tunnels, eagerly awaiting the chance to feast on fresh flesh.
Ecosystem Cycles
Ordinarily, the Varnian food chain remains quite consistent, with young rocs and young purple worms remaining firmly at the top above ground, meanwhile the hook horrors firmly hold the position below ground, with the occasional intermingling between the two. After the purple worm's breeding cycle has completed, the influx of infant purple worms arriving en masse typically uproots this natural order. Despite usually remaining at the bottom of the food chain, their numbers and tendency to move in a swarm catapult them to the top of it underground.
Natural Resources
Rich in minerals and ores, it is predicted that the dwarves of the Varn Mountains supply Jotunheim with nearly half of its weapons and iron.
