Flaming

Flaming is the rare Gifted Power that creates and controls heat and fire. Flaming is found all across the world, often in desert and mountain areas.

Effect

by Lilliana Casper
Flamers are able to create fire from the heat in the air and then control that fire. They can also control existing fire, and some Flamers are known to make fire from the heat in embers, food, and even people. Flamers also manipulate temperature to some degree, although they can only raise it. They can do this even in the coldest places, although weaker Flamers need more heat around them while stronger ones only need body heat or friction.   Flamers are usually employed to heat buildings and start fires. They help in kitchens and restaurants, as well as in glassmaking, forging, land clearing, and transportation. Their most common place in society, however, is in nobility houses. The former monarchy of Decrowed was led by a house of Flamers, and multiple countries in Eterlania, Narthica, and Rushlinna have Flaming houses, many with significant political and Gifted power.

Side/Secondary Effects

Just like all Gifteds, Flamers are afflicted with Downsides. They exhibit extreme mood swings, hallucinations, uncontrollable nightmares, and occasionally unnatural cruelty. This makes them some of the most unstable Gifteds, and definitely the most unstable elemental Gifteds.

Manifestation

Flaming is always accompanied by a raise in temperature. The space around the Flamer especially will heat up. Flickers of flame can be seen at the Flamer's fingertips and they tend to show off a bit, raising their hands and letting the fire curl over their hands. Whatever they are aiming to do will change, with their fire burning, traveling, and attacking where it is directed.
"I don't care!" he screamed. Fire burst out of him, curling across the backs of his hands and flickering around his fingers. "Your life is worth more!"
— Lady of Reality

Discovery

Because of the emotional temperament of Flamers, their power was discovered relatively quickly, probably around the same time as Healing, during the later Dark Ages. It was listed under Gifted abilities from the first records of their existence.

Applied Restrictions

Like nearly all Gifted powers, Flaming has little to no restrictions in most countries. Generally, the only regulations relate to training requirements. In countries like Dalirn, where all Gifted powers are illegal, Flaming is one of the most heavily regulated and punished powers, mostly due to its highly volatile nature and the difficulty in hiding it, especially with how much emotions control it.

An Imperfect Country

According to the Republic of Decrowed, they are the perfect country. All of their citizens have equal rights, healthcare, and access to education. Most importantly, all citizens over sixteen can assist in making decisions for the country. But the founding of the republic is a darker history than that taught to children now.   The rebellion started with a death. A governor in a far province was killed by a member of House Halkran, the ruling Gifted house. His political allies were furious and staged a takeover with others. During the storming of the Halkran palace, the rebels massacred everyone they met, including servants and visiting nobles. Most atrocious of these deaths were those of the six-year-old twin princes who had recently manifested as Flamers. The only noble survivor was their older sister.   Despite the violence of the coup, none of the neighboring countries could intervene. Decrowed became a democracy, and from then on its citizens were taught to believe in the superiority of the country and to ignore its horrifying history.
