In times long past, the entire desert was controlled by the Court of Dao. They were cruel overlords who isolated the desert from its neighbours, leading to stagnation in its technological and cultural progression. Eventually, the Dao were overthrown by an unknown group of wizards who installed both magical and human safeguards to ward against the return of the Dao. These events had long ago faded into folklore when the desert was discovered by the people of Jaytown. Drawn there by the guidance of a warlock's Dao patron, many adventurers flocked to gather ancient artefacts hidden throughout the land. When seven of these artefacts were given to the Dao Lord, Safok the Honest, the Court of the Dao found themselves restored and began to reestablish their rule over Spectral Sands. Unfortunately for Lord Safok, they made a tactical error in choosing to double-cross the adventurers who delivered the artefacts to them. The adventurers joined forces with the remnant of the ancient wizard's wards (a sentient crystal found under the crystal fields) and defeated the Dao before they could regain their full strength. The artefacts have once again been hidden and the threat from the Dao has been stayed, for now.Story Hooks
