Sorosia

Sorosia is one of the great powers in Ivaria. It spreads east of the Chaoslands to the shores of the Deepness.   The Capitol is Verros, the most populous city in Ivaria.

Structure

The Monarch. The highest authority in Sorosia other than the Church of the Three.   The Monarch is selected from groups of commoner orphans who are picked from the populous at age eight based on their intelligence, wisdom and bravery.   These orphans are educated in magic, combat arts, military strategy, history, and art. A new Monarch is chosen from among them when the current Monarch steps down, or is removed from office by a three fourths majority vote of both the Provincial Council as well as the Council of Lords. The Provincial Council choose, from the current group of potentials, a candidate who is of age and best suited for the needs at hand. There are always at least five potential monarchs. Those who do not get selected are given positions of import in the government. Some are adopted by nobles with no children to carry their house name forward.   Their responsibility is the safety and prosperity of Sorosia and its people. They wield extraordinary power over the military and the Provinces of Sorosia. Their commands can only the overruled by a three fourths majority vote of the Provincial Council and the Council of Lords combined.   The Council of Lords. Representing the heads of the Noble families of Sorosia, the Council of Lords holds jurisdiction over the laws governing the militia, law enforcement, and tax collecting policies of the provinces. Their decrees can be overruled by the Monarch or by three fourths majority vote of the Provincial Council.   The Provincial Council. Elected from among the Common Folk, the Provincial Council debate and create laws that govern agriculture, public health, and infrastructure. Their decrees can be overruled by the Monarch or a three fourths majority vote of the Council of Lords.

Culture

Sorosian fashion is gothic and dramatic. Their clothing tends to cut dramatic lines and sharp angles, dark but with flashes of color. Wide-brimmed hats, tophats, puffed sleeves are common. The women of Sorosia do not wear dresses or skirts, preferring instead breeches or tights paired with long shirts and coats.   Sorosians enjoy bold and creative cooking and use every occasion to have large, family feasts.   Homosexuality is not taboo in Sorosia except perhaps by certain fanatical sects of the Bright Mother.

History

Thousands of years ago, the region was known as Esgeld, and was a loose magocracy of city states ruled by the Wizard Lords. The Sorosians invaded, fleeing their doomed home continent, conquered Esgeld and declared the realm New Sorosia. Over time, it became known simply as Sorosia, as all specific knowledge of Old Sorosia was lost to living and historical memory.
