Duergar

The Duergar are the result of experiments carried out on Dwarves by the Synlirii, a species of terrible creatures that dwell below the surface of Itzantia; in the Underdark. During the War of the Gods the Ironweaver clan who mined the Knurlnien Mountains for coal and diamonds were attacked from beyond the depths of their mineshafts. Instead of the Dwaves being slaughtered, they were captured and operated on, both mentally and physically.

Another clan of Dwarves, Clan Kragforge, assaulted the mines and rescued the now changed Ironweavers. They pushed back the Synlirii and collapsed the mines to keep them at bay. The Duergar were born and vowed to guard the mine entrances for the rest of their time.

So the Duergar are a race with a miniscule population and generally keep to themselves in the town of Knurldrâthn Rast. Their kind are treated outside of the areas they live with distrust.
