The Name Eater

An eldritch monster created at the moment of Vedena's outburst, the name eater is the living embodiment of the goddesses wrath and hurt made flesh and given shape by the power of the Black Dreadnought. Once it was a powerful fey known as the gardner who guarded the tree of witness around which Cadar built his machine, but that is a creature of the past. For the tree of witness and the Black Dreadnought around it held off the Beast of Oblivion, and Vedenas strike against it disrupted that function for a moment. This allowed the Beast of Oblivion to encroach a tendril into the world for but a moment, a tendril that was absorbed by the Gardner. This act would lead to the death of the Gardner as it was, corrupting him into the Name Eater and destroying the protection around the Black Dreadnought. For decades, it wandered the expanse of the shadowfell, preying on all who came in its path. It is a beast with the power to consume the essence of personality, destroying everything that makes somebody unique. Hopes, dreams and love all falter before the strength of the Name Eater, reducing its victims to little more than animals. It was captured by the Prince of Frost in his exploration of the Feydark, fascinating him to no end. With the help of his mother and siblings, he chained the beast and hauled it south to Ferrolas, under the guise of keeping it hidden and away from those it might hurt. Instead, he fed it his name so that it might never be used against him by another fey, and destroyed several of his enemies by allowing the Name Eater to catch their scent, devouring them whole in their dreams. This did not escape the notice of other Archfey in the court, however, and they too fed their names to the beast until it was a tradition of the winter court, with all who fail to follow it, or never deduce its existence, fed to the beast soon after their ascension. Because of this, the winter court has the most ascensions to archfey than any other court, due to the fact that a powerful enough fey can harness the feeding of their name to the beast in order to ascend, even if they are missing some of the power their peers possess. This is balanced out by how many archfey fall soon after entering the court. The beast has been set loose by the Prince of Frost to devour Atrius in order to prevent his ascension.
