Aliodium Anesthesia

Using the newly-discovered drug Aliodium as an anesthetic is a new and highly controversial practice in Ithan. Although the drug has not been proven to be toxic, it is highly flammable and explosive when exposed to large amounts of heat. This fact is the reasoning behind many physicians' refusal to use the drug. They claim that Aliodium is more danger than it is worth. Despite this, most government-sponsored physicians of Lusatia use the drug to remove the pain associated with invasive procedures and surgeries unless specifically asked not to do so.

History

The drug Aliodium was discovered late in the year 1320 AF by Alison Oberst. Oberst had been experimenting with Annidium and discovered a new substance after interrupting the digestion process of a Gobbled Ooze who had ingested Annidium. Oberst had fed the Ooze Annidium in hopes to find new uses for it, but had noticed the Ooze beginning to seemingly fall asleep as it digested the drug. She interrupted the digestion process by taking the new substance out of the Oozes' body, and studied it under the microscope. After running many tests, she realized that she had discovered a new drug that could be used as an anesthetic. It was named Aliodium in her honor by her colleague Liam Berne.

Aliodium was tested heavily for any unsavory side effects after its discovery, and was proven to be non-toxic up to 30 mL/kg. Overdose is very rare, but can result in death via asphyxiation. Aliodium has not been proven safe for usage by Faeries or Imps. Aliodium can be dangerous for use by those pregnant or breastfeeding; it is unknown if the drug is passed on through uteroplacental blood flow or through breast milk. It may be toxic in lower quantities than average in the young children of any race, and so the smallest quantity possible should be used in those under the age of six.

Appearance and Effects of Aliodium

Aliodium appears as a blue-tinged, transparent liquid at room temperature. It smells vaguely floral and tastes slightly sweet. If ingested, the liquid will induce a state of anesthesia within five to ten minutes.
