4/20/21 Session 12 - "The Abbot"
Our Adventurers carry on from Vallaki to their destination of Krezk. On the path the are accosted by a group of Berserkers and forced into a fight. Shortly after dispatching the Berserkers, the party arrives at the gates of Krezk, it's cold and slightly frosty here.
The guards look down at the party and seem to refuse to let them in at first. After pleading with the guards, Dmitri Krezkov, the town's Burgermaster appears and speaks with them. Dmitri eventually relents and lest the party in to speak about the Abbey of St. Markovia and their refugee. The town itself is a very weary place, the people there are very weary of Strahd and the abbey on high seems to not be what it should be. Upon closer inspection, it appears as though each house has several graves out front of each of them.
Speaking with Dmitiri in his home, our adventurers learn that the Abbey is run by someone called "The Abbot" and the townsfolk will not associate with the place or the Abbot himself. As well, Dmitri's son has recently passed on. Anna, Dimitri's wife, appears to still be mourning the death of her child. Dmitri explains that the town itself cannot hold a refugee as there are no additional supplies or places for another person to reside. He does make note that they have been waiting a very long time for their most recent shipment of wine from the "Wizards of Wine" who reside to the South. The adventurers leave the home to speak amongst themselves when some villagers come to the Burgermaters home to request assistance from Anna with a childbirth. Anna can be seen heading off to assist as Adrid and Lilithus follow along to see if they can be of any help as well. The childbirth goes well, but Anna sadly notes that the child has no soul. Confused, Adrid and Lilithus probe deeper to find that some people in Barovia are essentially born blank without the spark of life. Some things click and they can recount a few times where it has made sense and they have encountered a few people like this.
After relaying this information to the rest of the party, our group heads to the Abbey to see if they can meet with the Abbot. They leave Ireena in town and make the journey up the hill. After reaching the gates, they are confronted by two guards, Otto a stout Donkey/wolf-man and Zygfrek, a lizard/cat/wolf woman. They lead them to the inner courtyard of the Abbey where they are asked to wait. While waiting they see another person seemingly strung up to a post who appears changed as well. Something foul seems to be afoot.
The Abbot appears, a very handsome and radiant man and they begin to speak. Not wanting to give away any information, as the place seems less safe than first imagined, the party makes small talk with the Abbot. He eventually mentions in passing that he is looking for a wedding dress. The conversation continues as the Abbot asks Adrid in to speak more.
