The Liad

The Liad was an ancient king who ruled over the Kingdom of Atreus in time now passed into myth. The truth of the Liad has long since been lost to the fog of time, but the claims have no end. Some say the Liad was a simple man, a leader who came from humble birth and rose to lead the entire Kingdom during a time of terrible strife, while others claim the Liad was an Avatar of the all-mother herself and acted as emissary of true divine will in creation, and the myriad possibilities between as well.    Whatever the truth of the Liad only Akashia knows, but what is known is that the Liad led Atreus to become the eternal kingdom. The first story of the Liad tells how the Kingdom of Atreus was originally a small city-state managing to survive in the world following the fall of Dralis. Some claim at this point in history Atreus was already a thriving Kingdom while others describe it as little more than a small settlement of men and goblinkin totally dominated by the dragons. In the tale, the Liad was a young man who became the greatest dragon slayer of Atreus, eventually leading a band into Dralis itself and slaying the lord of all dragons, last true drake in the city. In doing so, the Liad became the king of Atreus and would lead the Kingdom to grow and thrive, even allying itself with the Adamanta to the north, architects of the fall of Dralis.   Another story claims the Liad appeared hundreds of years later, when the Kingdom of Atreus and the elves of Larathorn were on the brink of open war. After decades of cool relations and hot tempers spured by the kingdom's expansion, the elves were ready to do the unthinkable, leave the protection of their woods and march across the mountains into Atreus proper. This tale claims the Liad returned from the dead and reclaimed the throne, descending to speak with emperor Mazoru directly. These two divines among mortals faced each other in sealed chambers and when the doors were opened there was peace between the two nations and the city of Marren was founded as a place of trade and peaceful interaction between the Atreans and the elves.    Stories continue throughout the ages, some describing the Liad as a young man, others as a being of pure magic, and others as a spirit of the bygone avatars that possesses an Atrean worthy to represent the eternal kingdom. All the tales share one claim though, that one day the Liad shall return again in a time of great calamity and will make a choice which will shape the fate of all creation and every mortal. Until the Liad returns, the throne of Atreus remains empty and the princes rule in absence of their legendary king.
