In this period, a NEO is selected as a long term nuclear material deposit site, and a vast majority of Earth's radioactive waste is moved there.

After a large amount of delibiration, mostly on which asteroid to use and how to get the material off planet, the United Nations finally agreed on a location for the long term deposition and storage for the nuclear waste that had accumulated in various short term deposit sites.
The asteroid was found to be stable, unlikely to hit another asteroid or planet, and far enough away from earth to pacify those worrying about it hitting them. The asteroid is close to mars, and this shortsightedness would be one of the things put into the list of grievances of the early PDRM.
At this point, the UN could, reasonably cheaply and safely with the use of orbital rings, take the nuclear waste off planet, where it boarded a convoy of ships, massivly spread out, with a heavy Peacekeeper prescense. After a couple of months, nearly all of the waste was taken off planet, with what little remained in salt mines and the finnish site. From there, it was placed into deep mined out portions of the asteroid, which were then sealed and booby trapped. After placing a number of retroreflectors, point defense systems and a few simple torpedoes, as well as a highly redundant computer and radio system, the UNSF retreated from the rock.
