Interstellar Probe
These probes come in a variety of types, but all have a few things in common. All are one way, all are controlled by retired AI, and all have specific controls set up to prevent replication.
These probes are sent out to whatever system looks interesting, though at this point it is just whatever system on the list of currently unexplored tickles the fancy of the AI. Most nearby interesting systems have been explored, and so it leaves the further away interesting ones, or the closer more boring ones.
The current furthest is 34 Light years away, slowing to examine Gliese 86. The current furthest target is Gliese 3293 , but that wont arrive for another 250 years or so.
Most of these probes travel at a significant percentage of light speed, being accelerated by a private launch system near the sun to up to 0.1 c, followed by more standard laser pushing and torchdrive acceleration. Most are equipped with magnetic sails to slow themselves down, along with their torchdrives and other systems.
Some interesting missions that have taken place include the first detection of interstellar life, and a mission to image the voyager 2 probe.
