The northern part of the island has a few active volcanoes but large and violent eruptions are not common. The southeastern part of the island has dense forest and this part of the islands coastlines are the most densely populated. The entire island enjoys mild weather year around. Southwest of the mountains the land is very wet. Northeast of the mountains the land is much more arid.
