Mariam

  • Freezing Biosphere
  • Breathable Atmosphere
  • Tech Level 4
  • Millions of Inhabitants
Mariam is a frozen world dotted with several cities of non human origin, completely frozen over. A large dome located on the equator is the only source of natural heat on the planet, and an undecipherable radio signal is being broadcast on repeat.   Several smaller domes filled with human survivors have been located on planet, and it was revealed that the world is locked in this frozen cycle due to a malfunctioning weather control machine on the northern ice cap.   This state of affairs continued for two years after The Scream, until UNW explorers Katya and Charles Trivedi created a storm-capable vehicle with the help of several stranded human communities on planet. Braving the storm-wall, they investigated and repaired the malfunctioning weather control center, correcting the out of control weather patterns before massive damage rendered it inoperable.   The planet is expected to gradually experience fewer storms, but nothing will melt the now permanent frost and snow.   Recently, other settlements on planet of those surviving the storm season have begun making contact with the United Nations of Worlds, along with an awakening race of machines, calling themselves the Machine Technocracy. The planet is also home to a robust teleportation satellite constellation courtesy of Ad-Astra Corporation.   In December 2667, an Imago Dei Fleet naming itself The Exalted Path arrived at Mariam and engaged in negotiations with The Machine Technocracy. The nature of the accord struck between the two is not known, but flocks of cargo lifters returning to orbit full, and the loss of signal at Technocracy headquarters indicates they have likely been assimilated into the Exalted Path's warhost.

Important Sites

The Hub

Despite its name, The Hub is not the largest city on Mariam, but was once the last outpost before the 'storm wall' of the malfunctioning weather control tower prevented further northern travel. With the heroic efforts of previous UNW explorers in disabling it, The Hub has grown in the years since into a trade outpost , taking advantage of its position near the coast for aquamining, fishing, and refinement of light industrial goods. Like all settlements on Mariam, it is enclosed by a massive heat absorbing dome in order to keep the inhabitants safe from the constant freezing temperatures. The dome has been recently expanded for more housing and industry as the population of the city grows.
