City of Light Settlement in Iria | World Anvil

City of Light

The City of Light is the largest city in all of Iria and one of the most open. Large golden flecked, crystal-like marble walls extend around the city. Two walls of the same material make up the inner and outer walls of the city. The closer to the walls you get the more they give off this crystal-like appearance seeming almost translucent, yet if you try and look at it closer you cannot see anything through it. Most of the city is in the same whites, golds, and occasionally other pastel shades.

Defences

A paladin order named the Keepers of the Light keep the city, and occassionally the realm, safe from all threats. They work closely with the Priestesses of Light, the Golden Void, Diplomats, rulers of other kingdoms, and commoners alike to ensure threats are handled. Most of the Keepers of the Light work voluntarily within the City itself but those sent out to help in other nations are given money to pay for all expenses they will need.

Industry & Trade

Most of the city of light stays afloat through gifts to the temple. The people trade amongst themselves, Farmers bring their stock in and trade to citizens. People looking for work or looking to hire people on often come to the city of light as there is such diversity in its inhabitants. This work can range from working on farms to escort missions and anything else that can be thought of. Normally those who had traded within the city, or have come looking for someone will often make offerings either to the temples of the Gods who favour their request most of to the temple of Olissa itself. Any money that isn't needed for upkeep is put into the city to ensure it stays as it is. Many of the nobles, and those in high ranking positions often pay out of their own pocket (either literally or work voluntarily) to keep the city functioning.

Districts

Residential District: Some would call this the slums. Cramped housing for many of the non Cas natives to the city including many of the shop owners. Between the outer wall and the Inner wall. Guarded but less so than further into the city.
Temple District: Area dedicated to temples for any god that isn’t Olissa. They are all treated equally within this space.
High Quarter: A large, gated, residential community with the city of light. While the City of Light is known for peace and acceptance this area seems more heavily guarded. The gated streets are always patrolled and much of the ‘riff-raff’ are kept out of the perfectly cobbled streets of well maintained houses. Mostly home to those who are of Cas blood, rarely others live here where they are not connected to a Cas. Also, where many important visitors stay within the city they stay at the Sunbeam Inn.
Zevo District: Plain, open and often full of training Paladins. The Zevo district is the military district. While people are welcome here there are so places off limits without an escort.
Seel District: Swirling masses of shimmering pearlescent essence seems to hang over this area of the city. Within the swirling massed golden flecks play off the brilliant light ever present on Gador. This is the magic area of the City of Light, protected by the very mists that cover it as it bars those with malicious intent from entering. Within the barrier, white cobbled streets with similar white buildings trimmed in gold lead towards a large Marble stone structure within the center of the district seemingly floating in the clouds because of the mists.
Cay Market: (Pronounced Say) Large market where all the stores point in towards the spire. Known for its crimson brick pathways and the golden clad paladins guarding it. Don’t tend to find magical items here.
The Spire: Center of the city, a large temple with the large spire reaching up towards the clouds. Temple of Olissa, always busy with many people from all walks of life and religions.
Outer Limits: The area outside the outer walls of the city, home to the farms and forests that surround the city.

Assets

Taverns/Inns

Sunburst Inn: Located on the Eastern side of the residential district, the Sunburst inn is a 'workers' inn. It caters to many of the farmers, as well as the paladins who are off duty. There are often 'friendly' brawls here as it's not a place of catching up so much as it is a place for getting drunk and letting loose. The owner, Bryn Sterneye is a short Silan woman who is far more frightening than anyone else that's been in that place. Her son Meldek, who helps her to run the place, is a lot more quiet than his mother, often found reading at an empty table when it's quiet enough to do so.
Dawn Inn: Located on the Western side of the residential district, the Dawn inn is more family friendly. Often seen as something of a daycare during the day the inn is far quieter and far more accepting of others. Many of the shop owners and parents frequent the Dawn inn, sometimes just looking for their children. The owner Tharhak Loneclimber is a gentle giant. A brulani man who often seems to be more of a climbing structure for the many children of the city. He surprisingly soft spoken and gentle with everyone, but he can defend if he needs to.
Sunbeam Inn: Located deep within the High Quater, the Sunbeam inn is the nicest inn in town. Known for hosting dignitries and diplomats the Sunbeam has an air of poshness within the city and a status that keeps many from ever visiting its interier. The owner Keyra Sunwalker is something of a mysterious woman. Little is known about this seemingly meek woman who is very quick to remind people she is no push over. She keeps much of herself close to her chest. Balmenor Starsong, a Irn male, helps her to run the inn and is quick to jump to her defense should she need it, which she rarely does.

Points of interest

The Temple of Olissa: The large golden and special marble building in the center of the city that reaches high into the sky and always seems to shine with the light of Olissa. Many looking to start a family, who have faced hard times, or simply those curious will make sure the venture to the city to see the Temple once in their life. Those who worship Olissa who do not live in the city will often make the trip at least once a year to spend time at the temple.
The Celestial Athanaeum: The largest collection of public knowledge within Iria. The collection has just about everything you could want to know about, if its known, and then some. Even histories and writings from long dead figures though history have found their way to this location. There are also rumors of a hidden section of the library which holds even more knowledge that is not free to the public. Though most come for the knowledge the building housing it is not something to ignore either. Glimmering white walls shrouded in magical mist that makes it seem as if you're floating within the clouds themselves. It's a beautiful place for mages, knowledge buffs and commoners alike.
