The Primal War

The Primal War. The predecessor war to the fateful Sacred Cataclysm. Back then, the Divines had no idea that this world they had found was already inhabited. In a way, they were invaders. In a way, the Primordials were just defending their home, surely? Not that it matters now.   ~ Archmage Eshunu

Summary

The Rise of the Primordials

As the Divines created more races to inhabit the planet of Iontas and both the Divines and the races they created began to tame the chaos of Iontas, deep within the rock of Iontas, creatures known as “the Primordials” grew angry. These creatures were chaotic entities formed of untamed elemental energy. The Primordials were led by four Dawn Titans: Crei, the Monarch of Writhing Earths, Loscah the Overlord of the Eternal Pyre, Speir the Queen of Mistral Heavens and Uisce the Lord of Cresting Spires. The primordials had been born from Intevum’s body and had dwelt deep within the land. The Dawn Titans roared in defiance of mortalkind’s magical gifts and commanded their brethren to react as such. The sky screamed with anger and whirling columns of air tore across the land. The seas swelled and seethed as flames erupted from below with greater intensity than any had seen before. The skies became ashen and deadly, and the divines watched as their children were crushed between gnashing rocks and fed to formless terrors unleashed in the wake of the destruction.

The Great Betrayal

Some Divines were so full of grief and anger that they wished to abandon this world for another. They tried to convince their divine kindred to join the Primordials in wiping out all life on Iontas and letting the Primordial Chaos consume the world once more, so that they could move on and start anew. Others wished to prove they could tame the world for their beloved children. This caused a divide amongst the Divines. The schismatic deities became known as “the Traitors” joined their songs and swords to those of chaos and destruction, taking and twisting their children into the image of their intent. The war spread across the surface of Iontas for thousands of years, causing untold destruction of mortal and primordial life. A battle between the Queen of the Mistral Heavens and the combined forces of Toir and Meine lead to the near destruction of Speir and Toir’s red draconic head being decapitated by the Queen. This head fell to Iontas and gained life, becoming a great dragon known only as The Sanguine Calamity. This Calamity was lulled into sleep by Toir, telling him that soon the planet would be his and he was her greatest weapon. Eventually, the deaths on both sides were too great and the Divines approached the Primordials, requesting peace. The Primordials agreed to a summit and a Palace of Crystal was made to help bridge the gap between Primordial and Divine. The Dawn Titans and Traitor Divines met with the Precursor Divines to discuss a treaty at this palace. It was agreed that half the world would be given to the Primordials for them to do with as they wish, and half to be given to the Precursor Divines.
