Quagula (Kwag-you-luh)

The Maw of Avarice

For more information on all deities, see: Deities

Quagula, the Maw of Avarice, is the ravenous terror of the deep whose insatiable greed churns the very tides. A colossal, many-eyed scallop, her jagged shell is encrusted with the wreckage of the drowned, and her maw is large enough to devour ships whole. Storms are her hunger, shipwrecks her feast, and the ocean floor her endless vault, where pearls glisten amidst stolen wealth. Her priests, despised yet feared, preach one truth: all that sails belongs to Quagula, and those who deny her will drown in her embrace.

Physical Description

Quagula's form haunts the verses of sea shanties—a colossal, nightmarish scallop, her jagged shell crusted with barnacles, coral, and rusted treasure. Unblinking, shifting eyes line its ridges, scouring the depths with insatiable greed. When her shell creaks open, a maw of needle-like teeth awaits, grinding flesh, bone, and ship hulls into flotsam.   From its base, gnarled tendrils drag offerings into the deep as the screams of drowned souls echo within. Those who stare too long glimpse massive pearls, each trapping a stolen soul.

Tenets of Faith

  • Tribute is not optional—pay the ocean in gold, flesh, or blood, for the seas are ever-hungry.
  •
  • Spread the terror of Quagula's wrath; only those who respect her power may hope to survive her waters.
  •
  • Hoard riches, but never trust them to keep you safe.

Worshipers

Feared more than revered, Quagula commands the seas with capricious cruelty, demanding tribute from all who dare to cross her waters. The Maw of Avarice hoards wealth like the depths hoard the drowned, granting favor only to those who pay dearly. Her disorganized and despised clergy thrive on fear, offering no aid without a price and warning of the horrors that await those who defy her. All who dare to travel through her domain are made to know that Quagula controls the monsters of the deep. Adorned in shells and pearls, her clerics warn sailors that only with a cleric of Quagula aboard might their voyage be spared. Even then, it is not unheard of for enraged crews to turn on her clergy when a voyage ends in disaster despite their offerings.   Though grand temples dedicated to Quagula are rare, shrines litter the ports and coastlines, often found in the shadows of docks and hidden within sea caves. Merchants, sailors, and islanders leave offerings before a voyage, desperate to avoid the goddess’s ire. When no one is watching, her clergy collect the tributes, cleansing the altars with seawater and kelp to symbolize the goddess claiming her tithe.   During storms, sailors cast gold, gems, and trade goods into the sea to appease Quagula and calm the waves. In dire times, live sacrifices replace mere wealth. When voyages end in disaster despite these offerings, crews sometimes turn on Quagulite priests in fury. Pirates and raiders honor Quagula through destruction, sending wrecked ships, stolen cargo, and captives to the depths. Yet her favor is fickle—even the faithful may be dragged beneath the waves. Quagula does not bargain—she takes.
