Unique and exceptionally capable even among smart AIs, A.M.I. was created through Cognitive Impression Modeling using scans of a flash-cloned copy of Sarah Davidson’s brain, with the resulting neural patterns forming the basis of her Riemann matrix. Ami replaced the previous shipboard AI of the Blue Dawn following Kody Davidson's promotion to colonel, although she had a somewhat rocky period of acclimation to the ship's unorthodox crew. During her service aboard the Dawn following the fall of New Earth, Ami and Natalie Lorne started to have "girly" discussions together during the latter's night shifts in the ship's engineering area.

Her insatiable desire for knowledge can place considerable strain on her processing matrix, particularly when she attempts to integrate contradictory records, incomplete information, or material associated with Sarah Davidson’s preserved memories. She manages these pressures by separating sensitive information into isolated partitions, conducting repeated integrity checks, and temporarily limiting access to memories that produce unresolved conflicts.
