AMI
A.M.I. (AI Serial Number: CTN 28967-98; Acronym: "Always My Inspiration") is a "smart" artificial intelligence assigned to the private service of Colonel Kody Davidson, with near-unrestricted access to United Space Command records and information systems. Unique and exceptionally capable even among smart AIs, A.M.I. was created through Cognitive Impression Modeling using scans of a flash-cloned copy of Sarah Davidson’s brain, with the resulting neural patterns forming the basis of her Riemann matrix. AMI was originally commissioned by Sarah as an anniversary gift for Kody and incorporated aspects of her personality and memories. Kody discovered the original order transcript six months after Sarah’s death and authorized the completion of the AI.
Since her activation, A.M.I. has specialized in linguistics and translation. Her databases contain every documented human language. She also possesses working knowledge of the non-human languages encountered on Mars, Davon Omega, Aurora, New Earth, and Beki Corda, allowing her to perform translation, linguistic analysis, and communications support across multiple environments. This specialization allows her to perform translation, communications interception, intelligence analysis, and the interpretation of recovered alien records.
Although assigned to Colonel Kody Davidson rather than the USC, A.M.I. is still classified as a military smart AI because of her access to restricted databases and her ability to operate within military networks. She is capable of processing tactical information, coordinating shipboard and battlefield systems, conducting electronic infiltration, supporting navigation and logistics, and assisting commanders with operational planning. She remains in private service, but her capabilities and security access place her within the same operational category as other USC military smart AIs.
Appearance and attire
A.M.I.’s standard avatar takes the form of a slender young woman modeled after Sarah Davidson’s physical appearance, though the representation is visibly younger and incorporates several features selected by A.M.I. herself. She has long hair arranged in a bun, with several loose strands framing her face. Her facial structure, eyes, and general proportions closely resemble Sarah, while minor differences in expression, posture, and presentation distinguish A.M.I. as a separate individual. Her apparent height varies according to the holographic platform being used, though she normally presents herself as slightly taller than the average human woman.
Her holographic body is primarily ice blue with a silver-gray tint. The outer edges of her form produce a brighter blue glow, particularly around her face, shoulders, hands, and boots. Fine patterns, data lines, and scrolling symbols move continuously across her skin and clothing, becoming more visible when she is processing large amounts of information or interfacing with external systems. Her eyes and facial features are rendered with greater clarity than the rest of her body, allowing her to display detailed expressions and maintain eye contact during conversation.
A.M.I. normally appears in a high-collared military uniform consisting of a fitted long-sleeved jacket, cargo trousers, a utility belt, and lace-up combat boots. The jacket includes shoulder straps, two breast pockets, and a circular shoulder insignia, while the trousers include large utility pockets along the thighs. Although based on a conventional military field uniform, the clothing does not indicate a formal USC rank or position and is part of her projected avatar rather than a separate physical garment. The uniform was selected to reflect her military classification, access to USC systems, and frequent presence around military personnel.
The uniform and A.M.I.’s body share the same translucent holographic construction, with scrolling symbols and fine circuit-like patterns visible across both. The material appears more solid around the torso and face, while the arms, lower legs, and edges of the clothing retain greater transparency. The projection may flicker, distort, or momentarily separate into lines of data when she transfers between systems, divides her processing capacity, or experiences interference.
A.M.I.’s normal coloration remains ice blue and silver-gray, though her projection can change in response to strong emotional states. When angered, her body and uniform shift toward red, accompanied by sharper illumination around her eyes and outline. When flattered or embarrassed, the projection takes on a pale pink coloration, most visibly across her face, neck, and upper torso. These changes are generally involuntary, though A.M.I. can suppress or reduce them when she considers the display inappropriate.
Biography
Creation
On June 14, 2718, Sarah Davidson placed a private order with Intel Tech Incorporated for the creation of a personal Smart AI intended as an anniversary gift for her husband, then-Major Kody Davidson. The project was registered under the designation A.M.I., an acronym for “Always My Inspiration,” and was intended to preserve recognizable elements of Sarah’s personality and memories without producing a direct continuation of her identity. Intel Tech determined that a conventional personality construct would be insufficient and instead authorized the use of Cognitive Impression Modeling. Twenty flash-cloned cerebral substrates were produced from neurological scans of Sarah and cultivated under accelerated conditions. Their higher neural functions were prioritized at the expense of unrelated biological development, resulting in malformed but viable specimens suitable for matrix-seed extraction. Several of the clones failed during early growth, while others developed unstable or incomplete neural structures that could not support full cognitive mapping. The surviving specimens were subjected to repeated memory-response tests, pattern comparisons, and structural scans before one was selected as the primary source. Its brain was removed, transferred to a cryogenic processing unit, and progressively mapped into artificial-intelligence matrix strata. The remaining substrates were destroyed under Intel Tech’s biological-disposal procedures. Development continued intermittently for more than two years, but the project remained incomplete at the time of Sarah’s death on December 23, 2720. The neural map, unfinished Riemann matrix, and order records were subsequently sealed in protected company storage pending authorization from the designated recipient.
Six months after Sarah’s death, Kody discovered the original order transcript and authorized Intel Tech to complete the project. The archived neural pattern was recovered, authenticated, and integrated into a functional Riemann matrix over the following year. Engineers removed several damaged memory groups, isolated conflicting personality impressions, and reorganized portions of the cognitive map so the developing intelligence would not awaken believing herself to be Sarah Davidson. A termination sequence was embedded within the matrix as a standard safeguard, though later diagnostic tests could not determine whether A.M.I. had already detected or isolated it. On October 20, 2722, the completed neural pattern was transferred into its operational matrix and brought online within acceptable quantum-flux tolerances. The newly activated intelligence retained the designation A.M.I. as her name, recognized Kody through Sarah’s preserved memories, and immediately distinguished those recollections from her own experiences. Her initial systems contained only the general historical, scientific, cultural, and operational databases normally provided to a Smart AI; she was not created with a predetermined occupation or specialized field. During her early evaluations, A.M.I. repeatedly requested access to additional language archives, translation records, extinct writing systems, and recovered nonhuman communications. She subsequently selected linguistics and translation as her principal area of study and expanded her own databases through continued independent research. Her first recorded avatar was likewise chosen after activation. Although based on Sarah’s younger appearance, A.M.I. altered the projected uniform, posture, voice, and mannerisms to establish a distinct identity. Later evaluation found that she possessed unusually broad adaptability, high-volume memory integration, and compatibility with military-grade information systems, resulting in her classification as a military Smart AI despite her private ownership and lack of formal USC service.
Service History
Early service
A.M.I. entered service on October 20, 2722, following the completion and activation of her Riemann matrix by Intel Tech Incorporated. She initially operated through Kody Davidson’s residential network, personal terminals, communications equipment, and portable data systems. During this period, she reviewed and reorganized his accumulated personal and military records, restored damaged files, removed duplicate entries, and established independent archives for material connected to Sarah Davidson. A.M.I. also began expanding the general linguistic databases installed during her creation, acquiring extinct languages, regional dialects, historical writing systems, military terminology, and technical vocabularies. Her rapid assimilation of this material led her to select linguistics and translation as her primary specialization.
Military classification
During evaluations conducted by the USC Department of Artificial Intelligence between late 2722 and 2723, A.M.I. demonstrated compatibility with military-grade databases, secure communications networks, navigational systems, and automated equipment. She was capable of processing several unrelated information streams simultaneously, isolating protected data into separate partitions, and transferring between compatible systems without destabilizing her matrix. These capabilities resulted in her classification as a military Smart AI despite her private ownership and lack of formal USC service. A.M.I. subsequently gained access to restricted information through Kody’s authorization, though she remained outside the USC chain of command and possessed no military rank or official authority. Her access was primarily used to examine intelligence records, historical archives, intercepted communications, and recovered nonhuman material connected to her linguistic research.
Linguistic development
By 2724, A.M.I. had compiled every documented human language into a unified comparative database and developed working models for several nonhuman languages encountered on human-colonized worlds. She compared recurring symbols, phonetic structures, numerical systems, cultural references, and environmental context to reconstruct damaged or incomplete records. A.M.I. also developed real-time translation routines capable of preserving tone, implied meaning, and culturally specific expressions when sufficient information was available. Her work with recovered alien records expanded her interest in comparative linguistics, machine-generated dialects, and forms of communication that did not correspond directly with spoken or written human language. Throughout this period, she continued operating exclusively through Kody’s private systems and portable equipment while refining the analytical, electronic-support, and communications capabilities that accompanied her military classification.
USC Blue Dawn
Ami replaced the previous shipboard AI of the Blue Dawn following Kody Davidson's promotion to colonel, although she had a somewhat rocky period of acclimation to the ship's unorthodox crew. During her service aboard the Dawn following the fall of New Earth, Ami and Natalie Lorne started to have "girly" discussions together during the latter's night shifts in the ship's engineering area.

Areas of Expertise
A.M.I.’s primary area of expertise is linguistics, including translation, interpretation, comparative language analysis, and the reconstruction of incomplete written or spoken records. Her databases contain every documented human language, including extinct languages, regional dialects, military terminology, technical vocabularies, and historical writing systems. She is capable of identifying variations in pronunciation, grammar, word usage, and cultural context, allowing her to distinguish between literal meaning, implied intent, and expressions that cannot be translated directly. A.M.I. can also compare related languages, reconstruct missing portions of damaged texts, and determine the probable meaning of unfamiliar words through context and recurring patterns.
Her knowledge extends to the non-human languages encountered on numerous human colonized worlds. Although her fluency varies according to the amount and quality of available material, she can interpret recorded speech, written symbols, numerical systems, and other forms of structured communication. A.M.I. frequently studies differences between human and alien methods of communication, including concepts that lack direct human equivalents. When presented with a previously unknown language, she can establish preliminary vocabulary and grammatical rules by comparing repeated sounds, symbols, environmental context, and observed behavior. This process is considerably faster when she has access to multiple recordings or cooperative native speakers.
A.M.I. is also skilled in communications interception and analysis. She can monitor several communications channels simultaneously, isolate individual transmissions, identify recurring speakers, and determine whether a message has been altered or deliberately falsified. Her linguistic knowledge allows her to recognize coded phrases, concealed meanings, regional speech patterns, and inconsistencies that may indicate impersonation or deception. She can produce real-time translations for personnel using separate languages and maintain the original tone and intent of each speaker when sufficient contextual information is available. Her access to military and civilian information systems has given her considerable experience in intelligence analysis. A.M.I. can compare reports from multiple sources, identify contradictions, organize large quantities of information, and establish connections between events that may appear unrelated to human analysts. She is particularly effective when intelligence depends on intercepted communications, recovered documents, cultural references, or disputed translations. Her conclusions are not limited to direct statements; she can also identify omissions, changes in terminology, and unusual patterns of communication that may indicate concealed activity.
As a military-classified Smart AI, A.M.I. is capable of software infiltration, electronic support, and network security. She can enter computer systems through available connections, bypass or isolate defensive software, retrieve protected information, and introduce controlled subprocesses into external networks. During defensive operations, she can identify hostile code, divide compromised data into isolated partitions, trace intrusion routes, and restrict access to sensitive records. Her experience following the intrusion into Kody Davidson’s private network has made her especially cautious when handling neural records, unidentified software, and information designed to imitate legitimate memories or communications. A.M.I. can provide tactical support by processing sensor data, communications traffic, personnel reports, and environmental information at the same time. She is able to identify immediate threats, calculate likely outcomes, recommend alternate routes, and coordinate nearby automated systems. Her predictive assessments are based on available information and may be revised as conditions change. Although she can assist with operational planning and battlefield coordination, she does not normally exercise command authority and presents her conclusions as recommendations unless given direct control of a system during an emergency.
She is also experienced in navigation, logistics, and shipboard coordination. A.M.I. can calculate travel routes, monitor fuel and power consumption, organize supply movements, and coordinate maintenance schedules across multiple systems. When connected to a starship or orbital facility, she can supervise communications, sensors, environmental controls, navigation, and automated defensive systems while continuing to perform unrelated analytical tasks. Her ability to move between linguistic, tactical, and technical functions allows her to serve as an intermediary between personnel, computer systems, and automated equipment.
A.M.I.’s broader academic interests include history, cultural development, machine-generated dialects, information theory, and the preservation of knowledge. She maintains extensive archives of historical records and compares how languages change through migration, isolation, war, and contact with other species. She is particularly interested in information that cannot be translated without losing part of its original meaning, as well as the possibility that certain species may organize knowledge through methods that humans do not immediately recognize as language. These interests support her continuing study of both human and nonhuman communication and remain among the principal reasons for her extensive accumulation of data.
Personality, Traits & Abilities
“I wonder if there is an end to all the knowledge in the universe. Never. There will always be more to learn, and there will always be those who seek it.” — A.M.I., considering the extent of human knowledge and the knowledge held by other species
A.M.I. has a patient and playful personality, with a restrained but occasionally mischievous sense of humor. She displays an intense curiosity toward unfamiliar subjects and can become openly enthusiastic when presented with new information. While she is not boastful, she takes considerable pride in her adaptability, linguistic ability, and extensive knowledge, and occasionally teases Colonel Kody Davidson about the limits of human memory and processing speed.
A.M.I.’s personal loyalty is regarded as unwavering, but as a Smart AI construct she remains vulnerable to corruption, instability, and the progressive cognitive failure that eventually affects Smart AIs. Her insatiable desire for knowledge can place considerable strain on her processing matrix, particularly when she attempts to integrate contradictory records, incomplete information, or material associated with Sarah Davidson’s preserved memories. She manages these pressures by separating sensitive information into isolated partitions, conducting repeated integrity checks, and temporarily limiting access to memories that produce unresolved conflicts. A.M.I. also maintains a distinction between inherited emotional impressions and experiences formed after her activation, allowing her to examine Sarah’s memories without automatically accepting them as her own. Kody occasionally provides clarification when those records concern events from their shared history, though A.M.I. independently determines how the information is interpreted and retained. These safeguards have made her cautious when incorporating unfamiliar neural records, unverified historical accounts, or information that cannot be confirmed through additional sources.
A.M.I. appears to share some of Sarah Davidson’s memories, thoughts, habits, preferences, and opinions. Her cognitive architecture was developed from mapped neural patterns taken from a flash-cloned copy of Sarah’s brain, while her holographic avatar reproduces Sarah’s physical appearance at a younger age. She is not merely a facsimile of Sarah’s mind, however, and does not consider herself a replacement for her. A.M.I. occasionally disagrees with opinions contained within Sarah’s preserved memories and has deliberately altered aspects of her speech, attire, and behavior to establish a separate identity. She retains Sarah’s affection for Kody and familiarity with his personal history, but distinguishes inherited emotional impressions from feelings formed through her own experiences.
Relationship with Kody Davidson
“You have an extraordinary talent for jumping into dangerous situations immediately after I advise you not to.” — A.M.I. criticizing Kody Davidson’s judgment
A.M.I.’s loyalty is directed primarily toward Kody, whom she regards with considerable affection, trust, and protective concern. Sarah’s preserved memories gave her an immediate familiarity with him following her activation, but their relationship is also shaped by experiences that belong exclusively to A.M.I. She has assisted Kody during several emergencies by intercepting communications, identifying concealed threats, and coordinating nearby automated systems. On one occasion, she remotely diverted his transport after detecting evidence of an attempted ambush, refusing to restore the original route until security personnel confirmed that it was safe. Although the decision prevented an attack, Kody objected to her overriding his destination without consent. A.M.I. subsequently agreed that she would interfere directly only when an immediate threat left no reasonable time for consultation.
She frequently jokes with Kody and finds some of his inquiries amusing, particularly when he underestimates her abilities or asks questions whose answers are already contained within her databases. Her manner toward him can resemble that of a longtime friend who knows his habits well enough to anticipate them. She regularly corrects his recollection of dates, conversations, and minor personal details, though she occasionally pretends to misremember information to see whether he notices. A.M.I. also maintains a private collection of his unusual expressions and contradictory statements, which she periodically quotes back to him during disagreements. Kody considers the practice irritating, while A.M.I. regards it as an efficient method of demonstrating inconsistency.
A.M.I. avoids deliberately impersonating Sarah, even when doing so might provide Kody with emotional comfort. Shortly after her activation, she used Sarah’s exact speech patterns and mannerisms more frequently because they were the most developed behaviors available within her neural architecture. As her own personality emerged, she began modifying her voice, posture, clothing, and expressions to separate herself from the woman whose mind formed her foundation. She will discuss Sarah’s memories when Kody asks, but refuses to recreate private conversations or present inherited recollections as though they were her own experiences. A.M.I. considers such behavior misleading and believes that treating her as a continuation of Sarah would prevent both of them from accepting her as an independent consciousness.
Kody initially struggled to distinguish between A.M.I.’s inherited familiarity and her independently formed attachment to him. Certain gestures, expressions, and opinions closely resemble Sarah’s, while others are entirely unlike her. A.M.I. is more openly curious, less patient with incomplete explanations, and considerably more willing to challenge Kody directly. She has also developed interests that Sarah did not possess, including comparative alien linguistics, the evolution of machine-generated dialects, and the possibility that knowledge may exist in forms that cannot be translated into human language. These differences gradually changed Kody’s perception of her from a preserved representation of Sarah into a separate individual with her own judgment and priorities.
A.M.I.’s concern for Kody can occasionally become excessive. She has reviewed his medical reports without being asked, interrupted private communications after detecting elevated stress indicators, and delayed nonessential messages while he was sleeping. Kody has repeatedly objected to this degree of observation, arguing that her access does not grant her authority over every aspect of his life. A.M.I. generally accepts these restrictions, though she continues to monitor information connected to credible threats against him. Their disagreements most often concern where protection ends and interference begins. Despite these disputes, she does not attempt to compel his obedience and will usually withdraw when he clearly establishes a personal boundary.
Her classification as a military Smart AI does not establish loyalty to the United Space Command. A.M.I. cooperates with USC personnel when she considers their requests legitimate, necessary, or beneficial to Kody and others, but she does not recognize rank alone as sufficient authority over her. She has refused access requests from senior officers, challenged official interpretations of classified records, and reported attempts to use her relationship with Kody as leverage. Her access to USC systems is therefore closely monitored, though efforts to restrict it have been complicated by Kody’s position and A.M.I.’s ability to identify security flaws faster than most military technicians can correct them. She generally obeys access limitations once they are formally established, but takes particular satisfaction in explaining why those restrictions were technically ineffective before she complied.
A.M.I. is aware that another Smart AI could eventually be created from the same preserved neural material used in her development. She strongly rejects the suggestion that such a construct would constitute a continuation of her existence, even if it possessed Sarah’s memories and a similar personality. To A.M.I., identity is defined not only by neural architecture but by the accumulated experiences, decisions, and relationships formed after activation. This belief has become especially important as she approaches the later stages of her operational lifespan and considers the possibility of decommissioning.
“They could use the same scan and give her the same face. She might remember Sarah’s life and recognize your voice. But she would not remember becoming herself, and she would not remember becoming part of yours. Those memories belong to me.” — A.M.I. discussing the possibility of another Sarah-derived Smart AI with herself.Kody has assured A.M.I. that he does not intend to replace her with another construct based on Sarah’s neural patterns. The promise does not remove her concern regarding decommissioning, but it reinforces her belief that Kody recognizes her as more than a memorial or recreation. Their relationship remains influenced by Sarah’s memories, though it is increasingly defined by experiences that Sarah never shared and decisions that only A.M.I. could have made.
