Sedge

Diagram coming Soon™️

Sedge looks like a bush consisting of grass with long, thin blades, and triangular stems. There are a few varieties of Sedge growing on the Moors, the most prominent being Rabbit’s Tail and Paintbrush Sedge. Rabbit’s Tail is characterized by its round and fluffy seed heads. Paintbrush Sedge is almost indistinguishable from its relatives in the spring.

Ecology

Despite its name, the bushes of Rabbit’s Tail are often inhabited by animals other than rabbits, like field mice. Many insect species, such as beetles and moths, rely on Sedge for habitat and sustenance. Its dense growth supplies an ideal environment for small creatures that prefer not to be bothered.

Uses in Industry

The propagules produced by Paintbrush Sedge during its fruiting season are bound together and used as paint brushes. Other varieties of Sedge are also used for weaving, but are not as popular for clothing use due to their fibers’ coarseness in comparison to Purple Moor Flax. The most common use for these grasses is as thatching and basketry material, though they are used on occasion by Voligeneticists as a base for mixtures. Sedge has been attributed with a bolstering effect on human lungs when inhaled as a steam.
