Ember Wood

The queen's new son is a curious one. He's poking his head into every nook and cranny he can find, dragging out equipment and tools, messing with them as he investigates. Curious ones, we need more like that.    "What's kind of tree is the wood from?" I look over at him to find he has a log of ember wood in his arms.   "Ember tree. We use it in the forges, it burns hot enough to melt metals and make what we make." He looks down at the log then at me.   "Can I see the forge?" I smile and nod.   "You have to listen to me through and don't leave my side. Despite being fire resistant, you can still be badly injured by the fires."   "I will." I lead him down the hall to the forge, him still carrying the log in his hands. We stop at the entrance of the forge. He bounces on his heels, clearly excited. I tilt my head and walk him inside. His eyes go wide when he sees the forge.   "Pretty incredible, isn't it?" He nods his head. "It lay cold for almost seven years and now it burns with the heat of the sun."   I walk him over to the forge before noticing that he's barefoot. "Really kid! Where are your shoes?"   "I don't like shoes." He leans closer to the forge, looking into the white-hot flames. "Wood really burns that hot?"   "Yes, it does." He looks down at the log in his hands. "That small piece of wood is our life force, our strength. Without it, us smiths would have a seriously hard time doing our jobs."   He runs his hand over the pale amber wood then tosses it into the forge. He jumps slightly as it flares up, smiling. "Can you teach me to forge?"   I smile. "Sure thing. First, we're going into the forest and getting more wood. If you want to learn, you have to start at the beginning and the forest is the beginning."
