Ley-men Organization in In the Shadow of Princes | World Anvil

Ley-men

The Ley-men developed a unique philosophy of Animist Arcana through their investigation of and interaction with a phenomenon known as ley-lines. Sometimes referred to as "telluric currents," the ley-lines are underground currents of arcane energy that cross through the earth and intersect at the site of significant places of worship and mystical experience. This current is a concentrated manifestation of the earth's collective life force and those who master its power can create miraculous arcane effects.   The Ley-men were devoted to preserving the life force of the earth's telluric current and to safeguarding all life against the harmful misuse of its power. The Ley-men were aware of entities from other worlds or even other realities that would be drawn to earth's ley-lines. Hoping to protect humanity from the influence of extra-planar forces, the Ley-men forbid the use of Alienist Arcana to contact planar outsiders or petition for their aid.

History

The Ley-men existed before the Cataclysm but their exact historical origins are unknown. Denille Olivoix discovered their existence while exploring a hidden chamber at Clava Cairn in the Scottish Highlands. Within the Ley-men cave he uncovered a ley-pool, a leytap amulet, some ancient spell books, and a persistent illusionary figment created by a Ley-man named Blondell who appeared to be dressed in late twentieth-century attire. The figment of Blondell explained the purpose of the Ley-men to Denille, who proceeded to inadvertently undo a binding spell that had been used to imprison a rogue Ley-man named Roger Kurkas.   After discovering another Ley-men cave and the pool of "Findias" near the city of Dublin Denille occupied it and constructed his own arcane laboratory on the site using the principles and techniques of Ley-men arcane philosophy. Having thus reestablished the secret society of Ley-men, Denille sent his new Ley-men apprentices Dah Hood and Hüd vanDooren to Byzantium and instructed them to investigate rumours that Roger Kurkas had started some kind of mystic cult in the east.
