Geneviève Character in Immortals | World Anvil

Geneviève

She was born in Santes in 1734, which is part of the Aquitanian region of *France so she has part of that culture as well as the black/mixed race communities of Santes. She left a little further north for *La Rochelle, which also had a large black and mixed race community, where she first died in 1766.   She herself is mixed race - part *African, part southeast *Asian, maybe also some *European not sure because at least one of her parents were mixed race and from the *French Caribbean colonies (if I recall correctly).   She is deadly with both weapons and tongue. But she's very kind really, just doesn't take any shit from anyone.   Geneviève tends to be the intermediary when there is a conflict or growing irritation between two people in the group, although she mostly does this by insulting both parties, distracting them from each other.

History

Faruq was thrilled when they found Geneviève, since he was tired of feeling a bit like a third wheel. Geneviève was also inclined to trust him more than Fabia or Artur at first, since he's more coloured than them and she came from an environment that generally speaking had hostile relations between light and dark skinned people.   Although Faruq is gentle and patient, while Geneviève has a sharp tongue and fairly brazen demeanour, they share an immensely kind nature and much of their compatibility stems from this.   Faruq spans the roles of both peer and mentor to Geneviève. Since he was happy to find someone else to add to their group and she connected to him first, they quickly became fast friends. Yet the age gap was so enormous and Faruq as a result so much further along, that he was obviously part of the older generation together with Fabia and Artur.

History

Out of any of the immortals, Matas gets along best with Geneviève. They have a very similar, sharp-tongued sense of humor. Geneviève is very fond of Matas, she likes his rebellious, passionate nature. Neither does she mind his impatience and angst, but simply views them as the other side of the coin and can often bring him back to his senses by turning it into a joke. She also figures that time will bring him a little more into balance.   Geneviève enjoys the back-and-forth, the playful sniping at one another with Matas. They can keep it going to a point where it's exhausting for the others around them, who either leave as quickly as possible or tell them to knock it off. They generally have fun playing the younger generation to the older Fabia, Artur and Faruq.   Matas has a natural sharpness of mind and taste for subverting authority that Geneviève appreciates, and which can be very useful although sometimes inconvenient when directed at the other immortals. Matas in turn is impressed by Geneviève's talent for deception and dissemination, how she can be either quiet and subservient, diginified and diplomatic or verbally tear someone to pieces depending on what she needs.

History

Geneviève is Artur's protege rather than Fabia's. Rather somber, although with a sharp wit, when she joined the immortals, learning from Artur has taught her to find her own joy and a self-assuredness in her own body.    Where Faruq has mostly been a mentor in intellectual matters, Artur has been a tutor of physicality. Geneviève's natural capability for deception caused Artur to teach her much about acting with your body, both are totally brazen liars whereas Faruq is more subtle and Fabia more inclined to avoidance and letting people spin their own tales. Geneviève in turn has done much to increase the craftiness of Artur's acting - what stories people will and won't believe, how to use humor and flattery and insults to make yourself likeable, how to be overly pleasant and cause people to avoid you without becoming suspicious.   Geneviève, Artur, and Faruq have spent a lot of time together, turning their respective angers into deeper kindness; Artur's quick, intense fury; Geneviève's long- simmering, deep resentment; Faruq's slow-building, burning anger. The older two mostly guiding Geneviève along but she also gave them reasons to go deeper and further with this as they saw some types of cruelty becoming more systemic and inescapable.   Artur has a very deep affection for Geneviève. Even after 90 years, she still feels like "his new kid". This shifts a little with the addition of Katherine and especially Helena, as Geneviève also quickly grows into more of a mentor role herself, but rather than lessening it this deepens and matures relationship.

History

Whereas Artur is Geneviève's mentor, Fabia and Geneviève are friends. Fabia definitely doesn't have a binary view of gender anymore and though she refers to herself as she/her, her identity is more genderfluid. Geneviève was the first other woman to join the immortals and though Fabia had made occasional friends amongst other people, this was the first time she could really develop a close relationship with a woman again since her "mortal" life.   For Geneviève Fabia is a picture of freedom, a woman free from any bondage but the ones she chose for herself. Fabia has figured out a both free and stable identity, passing through so many cultures and yet connecting easily with the people they meet. As Geneviève has always struggled with figuring out where she does and doesn't belong in her mortal life, the way Fabia moves through life inspires her. She views Fabia's leadership of them more as protection, a safety net, than any kind of restriction (it's the mysterious force of their time travel that pushes them together, not a demand from Fabia).   Fabia and Geneviève have a similar sense of humor, although Geneviève's can be much sharper whereas Fabia is bolder and less refined, and they share many a good laugh together.   Geneviève looks up to Fabia, her intensity and determination which are rooted in kindness, her physical skill and ingenuity. She can't imagine how Fabia survived that long on her own without losing her kindness; Geneviève is 100% sure she would have made on her own but she is immeasurably relieved she doesn't have to do it on her own (Geneviève doesn't realise how much the others have brought Fabia). But neither does she fawn over Fabia, far from it, she is quick to point out any flaws she sees in anyone's plans, will step in if she disagrees with Fabia (though with more tact than Artur or Matas).   Fabia is glad that Geneviève is more interested in certain areas of life than she is (using clothing for more than just blending in, mathematics, and cartography to name a few) and that Geneviève has stepped forward on her account to mentor the younger immortals in these aspects.

History

Although more approachable than Fabia, Katherine still views Geneviève's raw intelligence, sharp tongue and cultivated brazen poise with wariness. To Geneviève it was somewhat startling to realise how intimidating and skilled she appeared to Katherine, used as she was to being one of the "young ones" together with Matas. She's been doing her best to appear friendlier and toned down her humor a little around Katherine, mostly keen to show her it's not the skill and wit that are the point but the kindness and care underneath that drive them.   At the same time she's keen to develop any skill Katherine might have in Geneviève's own areas of interest; Faruq and Matas are alright in more formal logic/mathematical areas but they have nowhere near Geneviève's aptitude (Fabia's better but has a limited interest, which is even more frustrating). Katherine's enthusiasm so far is limited as she thinks everyone is far too eager about all of these intellectual pursuits she doesn't yet see the point of - cartography is the only one of Geneviève's interests she sees any immediate application for and that doesn't give her immediate anxiety.    Otherwise, they're still sort of figuring each other out. Geneviève will often act as Matas and Katherine's interaction go-between and many of their interactions involve the three of them, which changes the dynamic a lot.

History

Helena is a little wary of Geneviève as her brazen manner and sharp sense of humor are difficult for a child to understand. Although Geneviève is very kind to Helena, the playful sniping with Matas and the way she can dissolve a conflict by drawing the attention to herself with an insult, appear as abrupt switches to meanness to Helena. Hence Helena views Geneviève with some suspicion and is quick to make herself scarce in situations similar to the above, worried about becoming a "target". All of the immortals are still completely oblivious to this (except Artur who has only just noticed) since like many children, Helena can easily disappear without a trace.    Geneviève feels an intense mix of mild panic about how to handle the addition of an immortal child while the group is already kind of in turmoil, and fierce love especially since Helena decided to adopt Artur. Geneviève would never say this to Matas, because it would hurt his feelings, but to Faruq she quietly rejoices in forming the "Artur's kids" group with Helena. It makes Faruq laugh and he teases her about abandoning him as a peer and really, she should join him as an "old one" since she is now one of the mentors too.    Geneviève purposefully ensures she is kind and keeps her comments in check when talking to Helena, because she does notice that Helena is wary of her. Since Helena's wariness seems to have increased rather than decreased though, she's not quite sure how to approach her now. From Helena's perspective this is because any extra kindness shown is suspect in light of what she views as Geneviève being mean on other occasions. For now, Geneviève is content to let Helena follow Artur around and figures that she should just give it some time without trying to push.
