Thief

Being a Thief is so much more than simply stealing from someone. A "thief" can be anyone, and anyone can be one. It is a true Gentleman of any kind that truly adopts the realm of Thieving. Become someone new, learn to live in the shadows, adopt any face and live any life you choose. This is all that being a true Thief entails. One doesn't chase after the treasure they seek, they chase after the thrill of outwitting those that would attempt to stop them.
— Gentleman Thief Luapion

What is a Thief

Notably capitalized, a Thief is someone who works to steal from others. Now that the obvious has been established, one can move on to the details: the manner in which things are taken, that is. That is what truly determines a thief from a Thief. Anyone can wield a dagger and place it to someone's throat, anyone can steal things from beneath someone's nose while threatening them from violence. These are not challenges, nor are they things to be proud of. A true Thief is someone who never resorts to violence, someone who steals without ever being thought of. They are also individuals who tend to work on strange and elaborate inventions that allow them to accomplish said crimes. There's no telling what a true Thief will do, other than what they won't.

Career Progression

Becoming a Thief

Becoming a Thief is a rather simple process. Most applicants are accepted outright, and few are ever rejected from taking the beginning classes. This is where the first level of judgement comes in, determining who has the Talent, and who does not. Later years of the Guild saw the introduction of a small fee of $100 by each applicant, this was made to weed out those just trying to take advantage of the free education to become thieves, instead of attempting to better themselves and become a Thief. Once accepted, the student of the Guild is then brought to the main Guildhall in the City of Drapine and are instructed on the ways of thieving and creation.

Famous Thieves

Arsene Luapion: Perhpas the most famous Thief to have ever existed in the known world, Arsene was responsible for some of the most breathtaking and captivating thefts in recorded history. Going so far as to establish themselves among the greats by din of stealing the most valuable Gem in the World (at the time, Circa 899 CE) the Gotterdajm Eye out from under the protection of the King of Ruelda. After years in the public eye, Arsene retired to open the Guild of Thieves to teach the next generation of Thieves. It is said that, as the industrial change was made, Arsene's family (who still operate as Thieves to this day) purchased large shares in one of the Papers.

Daniel Sea: With the rise of Gambling Dens in the city of Drapine, the idea to steal from these piles of money became more appealing. In response, security was expanded on to avoid losing even a single penny from missuse or theft. This, of course, made it all the more of a target for Thief Daniel Sea, who enlisted the help of 11 other Thieves, the best in their field, for the idea of robbing three Gambling Dens in one night. The job took several weeks to prepare and wound up with Daniel seeing the inside of a cell for loitering, but was ultimately successful.

Ardur Yuvestil: Never the most exciting student in the Guild of Thieves, Ardent was instead a diligent student and excellent study. He worked his way through the history of famed Thieves and plotted, in secret, to replicate every single theft that caught his eye. He then, upon graduation, led the world on a wild chase as he ran through fifteen different thefts in the course of one month. Each one more daring and famous than the last. Finally ending with the theft of the Gotterdajm Eye, just as Arsene had years before. Arsene's descendants invited Ardur to a feast in his honor after the events were concluded.

Public Reception

While originally treated with disdain and reluctance, Thieves in the Modern day have become something of Celebrities in the public eye. Seeing as how the whole mantra of a Thief is to only steal from those that can be stolen from without pains or loss of position, the common target is someone of incredible wealth and in a higher position in Society. Of course, most don't wish to lose their posessions, so an Auditor is usually called upon and a Percentage of the total worth of a Person is paid to the Guild to avoid theft. Anyone who doesn't pay this fee is added to a list of possible candidates to steal from, and even more so if the Guild recieves a request to steal from someone. Requests made of people who are currently under the payment system of the Guild are ignored and sent down the way to less reputable sources.

History of the Profession in Drapine

The Theif Profession has gone through many different forms over the years, starting with being the butt of every joke in the city after the Guild first opened its doors. This was quickly ended once the founder, Arsene, began stealing most of the possessions of those that made their opinion public. Of course those that supported the Guild were spared the trauma of having their belongings ripped away from them in the night.
*
While by this point you must be wondering: "Are they all men?" and you would be right in asking such question. If you instead asked "Where are the Women at?!" I would request that you step back, and read the pamphlet. The creation of the Guild of Thieves was that of a Mans intention to create a space away from the publicity of popularity. He did not, in any form, assume that anyone other than himself would attend the Guild. As such, he established it all with the idea that it would solely be for his family, his descendants. Never once stopping to think that one of those descendants would be a woman. The terms used are simply relics of a bygone patriarchy that still has yet to change.
— Melinda Luapion, Second Grand Daughter of Arsene.
