Eveasson
City state, protectorate of Strolis, and the seat of the College of Eveasson, by many considered to be the most prestigious magical academy in the Eastern Realms. Eveasson is on the edge of the Great Lake and is situated in the area known as the Lakelands.
General layout
Eveasson is located on the coasts of the Great Lake, with the College of Eveasson located a short distance of the shore on a tidal island. Its connection floods during high tides. The city itself is built around the main road that stretches from the southern edge of the city, all the way to the coast where a single road leads to the College of Eveasson. Following this main road south leads you through the Lakelands and eventually the rest of Tessuris.
Society
Eveasson is inhabited predominantly by humans, elves, dwarves and, to a lesser degree, dragonborn, gnomes and halflings. Aside from this, aquatic races, such as Grung, Tritons, Sea Elves and Lizardfolk are also found more often here, due to the presence of the Great Lake itself, and the many smaller lakes, ponds, marshes and swamps that make up the Lakelands.
Thanks to experimentation with teleportation magics at the College, races related to other planes, such as the Gith, the four Genasi lineages, and lineages originating from the Feywild, like Fairies are more common than elsewhere. Troughout Eveasson, these races are greatly welcomed, the wizards and witches oftentimes desiring to study their way of life, and even merchants and commoners being interested in the trinkets and stories these races have from their plane of origin.
Because of the presence of the College in the city, the population of the city is generally higher educated than elsewhere, with even commoners and peasants enjoying some form of (magical) education. As such, the services provided by the citizens of Eveasson are prized throughout the continent, much to the dismay of the arrogant and proud subpopulation of Grostinheart.
The Council of Mages leads the College of Eveasson, and despite not officially ruling Eveasson as well, their input is oftentimes considered by the count of Eveasson. During the sieges that Eveasson endured during E6, the Council of Wizards oftentimes were favoured as generals over those of the count of Eveasson.
History
Eveasson is one of the most ancient cities in the Kingdom of Tessuris, and even in the Eastern Realms, Eveasson was already old when other settlements came about.
Magical secrets
In E1Y3766, the first attempts at uncovering the magical secrets of the world were started on a small island where now the College of Eveasson is located. Together with the help of somebody called Naelriophis, they overcame the magical barriers and protections of the ancient castle located there, and founded the College of Eveasson in its ruins. Scholars disagree what triggered this discovery of magic: Some suggest that an ancient being gifted mortals magic, whereas others believe that the events taking place were merely a rediscovery of magic, whose use was lost due to some catastrophic event in millenia past. Unravelling these secrets and harnessing their powers laid the foundation of what led to the founding of the College of Eveasson, with Keyyra Lanovir becoming the first Archmage of the College of Eveasson. At around the same time,
Rumours exist of an archive hidden below the College filled with the total sum of all magical knowledge of the College of Eveasson, and that every archmage has been interred there after their death to protect it.
Experimentation
Since the founding of the College of Eveasson, the scholars working and living there have attempted to study the many creatures inhabiting the material world and the other planes. These studies, predominantly on behaviour, diet, and, where applicable, their magical powers were consolidated in the now gargantuan tome called the Great Book of Creatures, during the eponymousConference of Creatures . It quickly became apparent that the many creatures inhabiting the Eastern Realms had the potential to be highly dangerous to the populace. As such, during the same conference, a subset of these researchers founded a group to hunt these creatures. This group, simply called the Monster Hunters Lodge, often took on the secretive tasks to retrieve or kill any creature that they believed posed a threat to the realms. Soon after the founding of this Lodge, however, the purpose of protection was lost, and its members became more and more interested in the more invasive studies not allowed by the Council of Wizards. This came to a head when a series of experiments went horribly wrong in E2Y491, causing a large group of the creatures managed to escape their bonds. The creatures started wreaking havoc on the College grounds and in the city of Eveasson itself. Worse still, thanks to the teleportation magic studied in the College, these creatures managed to also spread to other places in the Eastern Realms, bringing the true nature of the experimentation to light throughout the realm. Adventurers, heroes and other brave people subsequently quested to slay or recapture these monsters in an attempt to restore the peace. In the same year still, the then Archmage signed the prohibition of the existence of any rendition of the Monster Hunters Lodges, a decree that stood until E6Y488 when Ajax Lorriaga, king of the Kingdom of Tessuris demanded the repeal of this decree at the end of the Conquest of Eveasson.
The War of Regrets
The War of Regrets (E6Y446 to E6Y452) was a civil war between king Kalistenes Lorriaga of Girones and his vassal duke Adrian Bollero of Strolis to imprison him over charges of treason and heresy. One of Bollero's more popular commanders, Mireia, the Grey Wolf of Strolis, stepped forward to lead the revolt, and rallied whatever troops she could muster. During one of the battles, she was woulded and transported in secret to thus far neutral Eveasson for healing. During her stay there, she fell in love with one of the wizards who cared for her during her recovery, the wizard Solomon Miramontes.
When the Gironian troops besieged Eveasson, she escaped with the help of her lover through a hidden tunnel somewhere deep underneath Eveasson and emerged again near Merridan in the Kingdom of Karessia. About a year after her disappearance, Mireia led a counterattack against the Gironian troops to break the siege of Eveasson, during which Kalistenes Lorriaga was turned into a sheep by Solomon Miramontes and immediately torn apart by his own war dogs.
Scholars still disagree whether the support of the Band of Blue Hearts mercenary army was supportive for Eveasson. Proponents believe that without their support, Eveasson would have fallen much earlier than that Mireia would be able to launch a counter attack, whereas opponents believe that the plundering of the city that the Band of Blue Hearts was akin to being plundered by the troops of Kalistenes Lorriaga.
Conquest of Eveasson
In E6Y488, king Baltasar Goris II of Strolis attempted to conquer Eveasson to obtain control of the Lakelands. Under command of High Sorcerer Kalipso Artabia, Eveasson repelled a massive assault against its holdings and withstood a several year long siege. In the final days of the siege, in E6Y502, Kalipso Artabia demanded a duel between herself and Baltasar Goris II. With a single spell, she slew the king, and demanded House Goris to abdicate the throne of Strolis, and eternal freedom for Eveasson. Baltasar Goris II's death quickly broke the Strolian armies due to infighting by the royal houses in the Kingdom of Tessuris, and the Firbolg and Lizardfolk tribes hidden in the Lakelands raiding the Strolian supply lines. House Lorriaga was again appointed as successor of the throne and its king became Ajax Lorriaga. Ajax Lorriaga accepted Kalipso Artabia’s request, which over the next few decades evolved into Strolis becoming the de facto suzerain of Eveasson. In the aftermath of the war, Ajax Lorriaga repealed the decree forbidding the Monster Hunting Lodge, to great protest of the Council of Wizards ruling Eveasson.
Recent events
A recent break-in has occurred in Eveasson, to the great panic of the Council of Wizards. They have proposed the King of Tessuris to have the crime investigated, and the Master of Secrets, Mokutar Portain, has been dispatched to investigate the mysterious crime.
