Dwarves
Dwarves are a race of stout humanoids that originated in the Underdark as the Duergar. In 1269 1E, the Duergar discovered the surface. Some lived in the mountains, evolving to become the Mountain dwarves. Others ventured out into the world and became the Hill dwarves.
Dwarves are matriarchal, believing women to be the superior sex. Female dwarves are slightly rarer, with only about 35-40% of dwarves being born female.
Naming Traditions
Feminine names
Dwarf females use surnames, which are passed from mother to daughter. For example, Ysolda Goldenhammer.
Masculine names
Dwarf males, rather than using surnames, typically give their father's name. For example, Arvik, son of Freyr. Males are considered to be part of their mother's clan, but do not use it as part of their name.
