Nir Daiol's Last Military Formation in Ikaharin | World Anvil

Nir Daiol's Last

''Until the last one of us dies, until the last one of us departs for the Gray Depths, Nir Daiol will live''.
The last remnants of a once great empire, the Last Ones are a military unit formed by the remnants of Nir Daiol's army after their collapse. Due to their traditions, though, they are on the verge of extinction, and when the last one dies, so will Nir Daiol's ancient history.

Customs

The Sworn Ones

''We are for the king, without him we are nothing''.
A legacy of days now gone, their whole society and system is based around royal veneration. They pray to the king, need him to preside their most important rites and even need him to crown their leader.

This wouldn't be much of an issue, were it not for the fact the entire royal family, which was the only one allowed to rule, died with Nir Daiol. Thus, as the remaining leaders refuse to alter their traditions, they cannot carry out vital functions.
In fact, this stubbornness has meant they haven't had an official leader for twelve years.

We shall love none other

''We are our king's arm, and he is the one we love''.
Another tradition borrowed from the fallen kingdom's military, all who are part of Nir Daiol's Last have sworn to love the king and the king alone, never feeling any affection for anyone or anything else.
Thus, they are all celibate, and the commanders even go as far as living in a compound where no woman may be seen. After all, it would be a tragedy if someone were to capture their attention and reduce their love for the king.

The Noble Ones

''We are the children of Jongar, we were made to protect the king''.
Yet another custom inherited from the days of the monarchy, only those who belong to a few specific lineages can enter the group. This is because, according to local beliefs, the founders of those clans were the direct children of the god of war and given the task to protect the king.   Back in the days of old, this was no problem, as the military caste was large enough to cover any losses. However, ever since Nir Daiol's settlements were destroyed and the elites' remnants hunted down, manpower has been lacking.   Matter of factly, the last member of that caste who could have children died a six years ago, so their numbers will do nothing but decrease now.

Current situation

How they got there

''When I arrived at the great capital, that seat of kings since time immemorial, all I saw was ash. I had arrived too late, I had failed, and now thousands were gone forever''.

Someone to rally behind

''With us will die Nir Daiol, but there is no need to be suicidal about it''.
Even if Nir Daiol's Last are, by and large, depressed and in denial, and even if they have no formal leader, in recent years has emerged a new figure. This charismatic soldier, though nothing more than a commander, has been able to command them to a certain degree.   Even if he will not acknowledge it, and most of his followers probably wouldn't either, it is clear he is grabbing power. He now has a special apartment within the elites' compound and is always seen surrounded by a significant percentage of the army (12 people).   The neighboring tribes, in fact, call him the:
''King of Nir Daiol''
