Falena Settlement in Ifiron | World Anvil

Falena

Demographics

People from all walks of life inhabit Falena with the exception of dwarves. While it's not impossible to find a dwarf in the city, they are not known to enjoy traveling across the waters of Blinndalk Lake.

Government

The city of is run on a Theocratic system of government, with the Priests of Blinn acting as their rulers. This city is seen as the center of power for the Church of Blinn and all taxation and laws are governed by the Church.

Defences

Falena's location is its greatest defense. Being on an island means that very few creatures or armies are capable of attacking it without a dedicated navy or amphibious qualities. On top of its location, the several layers of the city give it chokepoints to defend. Falena's greatest threat is an aerial assault, from which its only defense is from mages and clerics that reside in the city.

Industry & Trade

Falena thrives on travel and fishing. Since traveling the Gold Road is dangerous and can take much longer than traveling by boat, Falena is perfectly located as a hub for traveling merchants crossing Blinndalk Lake.   Since it is perfectly centered in the lake, it also has access to fishing which it sells most of its fish to other cities. Near the city itself, several residents have also set up fish farms to raise fish themselves. The Navy is careful and helps regulate fishing to avoid over-fishing the lake.

Infrastructure

Falena rests on a rocky island, with different levels of the city resting on various levels. Since its first settlement, the people have dug into the island to form the 4 levels of the city: Residential, Market, Nobility, and the Temple.

Assets

Falena is home to the largest navy in Itherion. They control the waters of Blinndalk Lake from the lake's monsters and from lake pirates, though the latter have been incredibly infrequent since the Navy's founding.   From the city's temple is a spring of pure water. While not as large as the spring in the city of Heartland it supplies all the freshwater to cascade down the city in a series of carefully constructed aqueducts. This has resulted in Falena getting the title of "Cleanest City in Itherion" as the aqueducts and spring also flow into the city's complex sewer system.

Guilds and Factions

Religious

While the Church of Blinn is the primary religion in the city, the other gods have either their temples or shrines present.
  • Celle - The Library of Celle within Falena keeps a majority of the records for merchants and residents. With the prevalence of water, they have several spells specifically to protect books and records from water damage.
  • Temp - A small church is dedicated to the god. They home a few priests and hold some sermons. The church aids in the city's little gardening.
  • Werno - One Wertic Tree grows in the city. It is tended to by a few priests.

Financial

Since Falena is such a center for travel, it has become a bustling trade center. Because of this several guilds have cropped up to stabilize the economy of Falena. These guilds also hire outside help for problems their members run into that are outside of the abilities of the guild.
  • Merchants' Guild - All legitimate merchants in Falena are a part of this guild. They agree on acceptable prices and fine members that break their rules. They have been given the authority to shut down businesses that do not join them. There is an annual fee that is used to increase the barrier to entry. The guild justifies this as proof that the business is capable of supplying funds to stay in business. The adverse effect of the fee is that it has created a black market.
  • Captains' Guild - Any individual that captains a ship is able to join this guild. There are no entry fees, it is more of a network of captains that agree on shipping fees. They also share information on troublesome customers which they keep a list in a ledger. Captains in this guild also share jobs that they either cannot take on or can't do alone.

Architecture

The architecture of Falena lies heavily on marble for construction as the island is plentiful in the material and shipping materials to the island can be costly. Large marble columns are popular for public buildings and open-air courtyards are common.

Geography

The island sits in the center of Blinndalk Lake. There are an abundance of natural underwater caves that dot the lake floor surrounding the city. A number of dangerous creatures have been found in these caves. Some lead to long-forgotten parts of the sewer system.

Natural Resources

The island has an abundance of marble, which the city used in the construction of the city. However, that led to the city being difficult to farm. Being on Blinndalk Lake there is an abundance of fresh water and fish.
