Exploration teams Profession in I.D.E.A. | World Anvil

Exploration teams

"You're drunk, Thomas, just leave it."   "No, you know what? I'll tell you what. Back in my days, we went by the hundreds to explore a new dimension. It was something, a real event! And it was thorough, we knew our stuff. Nowadays, it's just those pretty boys with their superpowers going alone and wrapping up in a few days which used to take years! And now what are we? Fired! Let go with nothing but a cheap retirement bonus."   "Sure, Thomas, now please go home, you're disturbing the customers."

Before the discovery of Alcyerna and Icarrya, exploration was conducted by teams of a hundred individuals armed with various skill sets. Around two third of them were military tasked to secure the base camp and protect the rest, explorers, scientists and engineers. It was a hard job, with a hard mortality rate, as foreign dimensions were rarely friendly. Unfit to human life, filled with dangerous creatures and hazardous terrain.

Despite the risks and the absurdly high turnover, it was a profession with more candidates than open spots. The thrill of discovery, the desire to carve their name in history for discovering a dimension of primordial importance like the one from which is taken Z Energy and the very high pay and risk bonus attracted people from all over Terra. Desperate, talented and ambitious people banded together to expand humanity's Dominium, one dimension at a time.

Termination of contract

When Alcyers appeared, with their superhuman physical characteristics and godly powers, it was only obvious to have them work as Explorers. While technology improved greatly, there had been no decrease in the exploration team's casualties and the cost of the countless deaths was putting a heavy strain on the exploration branch of the I.D.E.A.. After a few successful run, the exploration team were completely abandoned in profit of a single Explorer who would not die that easily, and even better, belonged entirely to the Agency.
