Rito
The Rito (pronounced /ˈriː.toʊ/, REE-toh) are a sentient race that hail primarily from the arctic regions of Hyrule. They are people who possess avian features, including wings with which gives them the ability of flight.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Avian humanoids covered in feathers, rito are particularly tall and thin compared to hylians. Their narrow bodies and hollow bones make them very lightweight for their height and arm span, which eases flight. Indeed, rito have arms that double as wings, and are able to fly as a bird does.
The rito are completely covered in feathers of a uniform color. The colors of these feathers vary greatly from one highland rito to another, and can include colors as diverse as blue, green, pink, brown, white, and more, but these colors tend to become more saturated as the rito ages.
Genetics and Reproduction
Rito form families and raise their hatched young, which can be in a clutch of one to six eggs, over many years. Their young begin learning to fly around the same time as walking, though it starts off as very clumsy flight.
Growth Rate & Stages
For the first few years they physically mature quicker then a Hylian, reaching adulthood in their teens, and rarely lives to see a century.
Ecology and Habitats
Due to their ability to fly, rito villages are built on mountains, or other locations where most predators have difficulty reaching. Such villages are usually situated near oceans, rivers, or other fish-filled reservoirs. They've adapted well to the cold temperatures common to the mountains.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Although rito are omnivorous, their tribes survive primarily from hunting and fishing, and usually only partake in farmed food when it is produced by other races.
Biological Cycle
Young rito often have feathers of a single color, though it could be nearly any hue. As they grow their feathers will often gain secondary colors and markings, either in the same range as their main feathers, or they can diverge off into different colors. By the time they reach adulthood their colors and markings will have come in completely. Males tend to have a more varied range of colors through their feathers, while females tend to keep to one or two colors with varying hues between. These colors tend to become more saturated as the rito ages.
Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
A majority of the Rito formally lived across the Hebra mountian range, though their aerial abilities and outposts made them wide spread across the lands in smaller groups.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
While Rito can fly forward, they cannot ascend on their own and rely on the wind to lift them upwards.
Civilization and Culture
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Rito culture places a relatively high value on honor and order. Postmen in Hyrule are almost universally rito, and their outposts are often used as go between for mail delivery.
History
A majority of the Rito population are born and raised in Rito Village, and many choose to live in that area most of their life. They are a very tight-nit, family like people. They take care of their own, and work towards the betterment of the whole village.
Parenting
Thanks in part to how many children a single couple can have in one clutch, reproduction isn't a mandatory expectation to all people. Instead parenthood is viewed like any other job an adult can choose, and respected as such. If a youth decides they want to start a family at some point, they will often find a family with kids and act as a student, learning all they can about how to raise healthy kids and give them the best life possible. These youth are often called 'Aerie Brother/Sister/Sibling'. They might go through a few different families and help them before finding a partner and having a clutch of their own. Parenthood is viewed as a full time commitment, and it's unusual for either parent to have a 'secondary job'. Instead the community makes sure they have what's needed to take care of the children.Other Jobs
If a youth chooses not to raise a family (either to begin with or deciding after being an Aerie that parenthood isn't for them), they have a wide range of other options open to them. The two most common seen are Warriors or Postmen. Warriors tend to keep to the village, and are always ready to defend their home and people if needed. Postmen are the more adventurous rito, choosing to travel away from home and join the network of postmen who keep the whole continent connected with each other.Rito Villages
Besides their main hub location, over time rito built outposts in most major cities, and dotted across the land connected roads. These outposts served a dual purpose of a place to rest for any traveling rito, but also a drop off location for anyone to have mail delivered. From these outposts, the rito working there would fly to different locations and make sure the deliveries made it to where they belonged. It was always said that if you wanted news to travel quickly, find the nearest Rito outpost.Ganondorf's Rise
Not long before Ganondorf attacked Rito village, he had his followers attack a large portion of these outposts, cutting off communication lines not just for the rito people, but for others who call Hyrule home. The rito who lived and worked there either had to flee, or were captured and have been forced to work for Ganondorf as postmen. The outposts themselves have been taken over mostly by Bokoblin and Moblins, who use the various locations to control and observe the roads. Because of this strategy, when the Village itself was attacked, the rito had little warning ahead of time. A large army lead by Ganon himself, marched forward into battle. The rito warriors immediately flew in to meet the army, outnumbered, but giving the civilian rito and all children time to flee the other way and escape. Unknown to the warriors, smaller clusters of Ganon's army had snuck in behind the village, and as the rito fled many were either shot out of the air with no way to properly defend themselves, or surrounded on the ground with those who resisted capture killed. The rest? No one really knows. All that's left of the rito across hyrule are the scattered remains attempting to survive without the support of the society they thrived in.Ganondorf's Rule
After the fall of Rito Village, the area was taken over by Ganondorf followers and is still a controlled territory to this day. The village itself is plagued by Malice and dangerous to even get near. Once the rito were scattered, laws were then put in place to limit the Rito's ability to return to their former way of life. No rito are legally allowed to carry weapons of any kind, and Rito even caught learning self defense can be punished. A rito caught with weapons, especially a bow, will be either captured and questioned by those loyal to Ganondorf, or be left with their weapon and wings shattered. The rito who were not in the village or outposts at the time of the attack were not rounded up as slaves, and were allowed to remain were they were as long as there weren't too many in one place. No rito are allowed to congregate, in order to avoid them organizing and lessen the ability to rescue their fading culture. No more then five rito are allowed to be in a single location, the only exception being a pair raising a clutch of their own children. Once they reach adulthood though, the law will apply to them and the family will not be allowed to stay together if it adds up to more then five.
Lifespan
Can live to ~100 years
Average Height
5 - 7 feet
Average Physique
Given their ability of flight, Rito normally have strong upper bodies and have developed high endurance for sustained flight. Their feathers also give them protection against the cold of their mountain homelands.
