Nouleng

The capital of the Kingdom of Xu, Nouleng was built around 1300 hundred years ago by Xu Fishuan, the fourth Xu king. From there on, the Xu presence on the island increased, and when the Fires broke out, and the Xu lost their old capital of Jeisun on Porpuda, they settled first in the smaller city of Seiwei on the east coast and then here, due to being in proximity to a large agricultural hotspot and to streams flowing from the mountains, offering natural defences and a choke-point for attackers.   Nouleng flourishes in the current era, as it has been over 200 years since the last civil war, and the realm is quite prosperous. The largest city in Xu by a significant margin, the capital may be many miles away from the coast but the proximity to the large river makes it east to access local resources and transport vessels.

Demographics

Mostly centaurs with some human slums, Nouleng is home to an upper class mainly consisting of the High Xoeu, the dominant ethnicity, most of whom can trace direct decent from the original kings of Xu, while the Orange Xoeu majority hold lower jobs, many are merchants who hope to challenge the aristocracy through money they made. Under King Xog and his predecessor, the increased demand for trade has enabled these merchants to successfully challenge many of the landed aristocracy politically, thus meaning one way or another, change is one the horizon. The rise of this class occurred far more quickly than in Phoz and thus the difference is much more dramatic.

Government

Absolute monarchy.

Defences

As an inland city, it has five metre high walls with scorpions, mangonels and the odd trebuchet to protect from assault from the east. The mountains and river allow natural protection from the west and north too. The south is where the city predominantly links with the other cities, and so is the most vulnerable flank due to the large stone roads coming out. Forts are therefore placed along this trade route to prevent rebellions from getting too far inland.

Industry & Trade

Surrounded by miles of fields, the city is also the agricultural centre of the Xu Kingdom, and feeds the other cities around the coasts and to the east. The same applies for minerals from the eastern edge of the mountains, while using traders to gain wood from the forests and the other cities to gain imports and send out exports.

Architecture

The royal palace is known as the Heavenly Sword, and bears a tower superficially resembling an arm raising a sword from it, standing over thirty metres tall.   Buildings in Nouleng tend to have large stables for centaurs, have grey bricks and red roofs, with wide roads to make way for centaurs and trading wagons.

Geography

At the edge of the river, it has a large port on its east side, as well as being located next to a major field system, allowing it to be quickly and easily fed. Trade networks exist to the thick Vorki forests, where they obtain wood and pelts. Being near the mountains allows gold, steel and precious gems to be unearthed, though only the easternmost mountains are easy to access.
