The Darkdwellings

At first the dust hole is just as you imagined a desert cave to be like, but as you travel deeper underground the air quickly cools, and gradually becomes humid. Suddenly it widens out into a massive damp cavern, full of the rustling of a billion creatures living in the sunless expanse.

Geography

The Darkdwellings are expansive and cover far beyond the borders of the City of Lore; they are still mostly unexplored by surface dwellers. They have many entrances in the city and the vast desert that surrounds it many of them are covered in sand. Some say you can even travel to the sea without ever coming above ground using the winding tunnels.     The climate is humid, typically damp, and cool in temperature unless the area is near a volcanic vent that will send bellows of occasionally toxic steam into the caverns. Anywhere the mineral rich water drips or flows leaves behind spires and curtains of stone as delicate as any temple.

Fauna & Flora

Deep in silent pools or rushing torrents of water lay uncanny creatures enrapturing even in their disturbing visages, and hanging on the walls sheets of mosses and molds studded with mushrooms crawl little beasts and bugs that hiss and whistle. In shallow trickles and puddles amphibians and fish go about their business with huge eyes without focus, or many of them, or none at all.   Among the bizarre pockets of life, civilizations thrive, the descendants of dwarf immigrants and the slight and elastic cave elves.     Some of the natural inhabitants include lurkworms, siltcrawlers, fish, insects, arachnids, bats, and amphibians. The primary humanoids are Elves, dwarves, and humans.

Natural Resources

Iron, rare fungus, unique animal regents, water.

History

Several hundred years ago multiple volcanoes erupted within days of one another causing massive ash clouds, tidal waves, and the earthquakes that created this series of twisting caverns.
