Nixsommer Northwrought

Magician queen of Menerv

Written by the character Annabell Onomus with meta information by Drackni

Queen Nixsommer Northwrought

"You look to the sky for answers Everddyne, and yet all you have been spared is derisiveness. Our history than is not so dissimilar."
— Nixsommer the Magician

Nixsommer

was in her time a renowned sorceress and queen to Menerv, the first queen in fact. She is noted for her arcane abilities, her writing, her philanthropic work with blighted areas from the war, and her close relationship with her comrade and eventual husband Everddyne Northwrought.
She has gone and been referred to by many different names and titles, derived from the various self imposed tasks she took up. Even her involvement in the war was initiated by herself with no record of what exactly prompted her dramatic entrance into history's stage.

Nixsommer's entrance to The Great Revolution

The legend in its most common incarnations goes loosely as follows: It was a bitterly cold winters day, the air was still dappled with ash from the volcanoes that had erupted to the south and north of the continent. A squad of revolutionaries were scouting out a possible place for a new supplies cache. The squad leader was Everddyne Northwrought who had risen up the hastily organized ranks to spite the ethnic bias of Menric being rash barbarians with his cool head and quick thinking.
One of the men, who it was varies from telling to telling points out some unnatural animal sign to the squad putting them on high alert. The note of the odd sign possibly saved their lives, soon after they were jumped by one of the Overni warbeasts. The beast apparently could teleport short distances and had venomous (we believe that this may be meant as acidic due to in some versions being compared to wyverns breath.) saliva.

The group was flagging badly in the drifts, beast being able to outmaneuver them to a disgusting degree when a stranger came out of nowhere striking their enemy with a magic polearm and damaging its ability to teleport somehow. Together they were able to press the advantage and kill it.
The stranger seeing the beast dead went to leave but Everddyne stopped them, asking them to come with the squad back to camp. The stranger replied in a language unknown to them and again went to leave. Again Everddyne stopped them begging, in hopes that though his words could not be understood his demeanor could convince in language's stead. The stranger dropped their hood, startling Everddyne by revealing a beautiful woman, in this case pale with dark thick hair and light colored eyes. After a rather dramatized exchange names are exchanged and Nixsommer the Magician officially entered the revolution and history.

During the Revolution

During the long years of the revolution Nixsommer became known for her prowess in getting people to work together as much as her arcane abilities. She is given primary credit to the integration of multiple ethnicities and species in one command order, saving time, manpower, and resources that possibly saved the cause more then her otherworldly powers ever could. When not acting as camp diplomat she was known to be assisting in scouting and stalker warfare with Everddyne's squad. Stalker warfare was a tactic that mixed Pumard invasive ambushing and hunting tactics that suites the dense undergrowth and rocky highlands of Menerv well. Nixsommer integrated these tactics with more efficient placement of supporting cover fire and new and quicker casted spells to revolutionize warfare.
Me? moving archers around? No, that was all my dear friend Sharp-like-owl. Pumard are proficient in using bow and arrows at closer range and in heavy cover. Now the spells, that was most defiantly me."
— Nixsommer Northwrought

Nixsommer and Everddyne

The exact relationship Nixsommer and Everddyne had isn't well documented. Many of their friends and contemporaries were in the same area or used spells to send messages making written correspondence rare. To add to this whatever romantic relationship they had during the war was most likely kept quiet to prevent accusations of favoritism as the amount of pull Nixsommer had, despite being a strange foreigner was object to a considerable amount of criticism.
"This stranger with odd magics mentioned in correspondences from the northern reaches is of concern to me. It is know to us that the insects take many places into their empire and twist inhabitants in wretched mechanized animals. How is it, when this women while appearing as one of the Menric barbarians, could not speak a word of any tongue we recognize?"
— Excerpt of letter from Alasi, General of the eastern front to Caladin,
General of the southern reach.
Accounts from Queen Nixsommer and Everddyne's children and family state that while the marriage had some political advantages, it was mostly out of genuine affection; The validity of this is debated, some arguing that while they were on good terms, the political advantages of the paring were too good to pass on. This is mostly considered a way to bring down national morale and disgrace the late queen by painting her as a overly ambitious outsider. In fact the political climate of the time made Everddyne's proposal to Nixsommer a risky move. He had just been made king of a new country and instead of picking a wife from a well established clan or a foreign noble ally he chose an outsider without even a last name. Adding to this, while the war was making it more common, magicians or other magic users without noble backing or training from an elder were viewed with suspicion. Today Nixsommer is viewed as a paragon of unity and learning, yesterday she was considered a outsider who had reached above her station.

After the war

After the Overni had been driven off everyone was tired, displaced, and ready to go home and rebuild. The wild tribes of Menric were almost completely integrated with one another at this point, brought close through a common enemy and had decided to form a kingdom. After some, heated, deliberation Everddyne Northwrought was chosen and he proposed to Nixsommer soon after.
I can with utmost certainty say you shall forever baffle me. When I look to the sky I see the same sparkle that is in your eyes, for whatever reason that may be, from wherever you may hail, whatever shape you take, I love you. Would you stay by my side? Give me your insight so I may take heed of your words? Start a family here in this kingdom of Menerv starting with us?
— Everddyne Northwrought
There are few personal letters in record between King Everddyne and Queen Nixsommer and none from before they were crowned. It is very possible that most personal letters were kept where latter generations of the royal family couldn't find it, or that some letters have been understandably kept out of scholastic records as personal family history. Most of our information is from second hand sources, letters written by people who had met them and third hand information from letters containing the latest gossip.
"It is with some regret that I write to you now that during my stay in the Menrvian royal castle at their capital Phundemin I was unable to negotiate a purchase of the parcel of land you mentioned in earlier correspondence. While Crude in upbringing King Northwrought is level headed, polite, and good humored while his Queen is a sharp-witted magician that I can assure you is no mortal women. If you wish to continue your search for ancient artifacts further east of the Great Wyvern range as you desire I humbly suggest unobtrusively sponsoring a third party."
— Official letter to the Emperor of North Haa'jiira from the era's diplomat to Menrv

Students

Despite much of her fame laying in magic she didn't take many students, denying many that asked and often referring them to someone else instead. We know that she did take a few students from various letters and documents from various people, but other than her own children, information on them is scarce.
One of the most complete and creditable correspondences goes as follows,
My dearest teacher Nix, It has been a long few months but I have finally made it! Here in Maphni the water is clear like I could have never imagined, coral that reaches up wider than two of me! I feel watched sometimes, not quite unlike to when we are training but unfamiliar. Do you have any relatives nearby? My research has been going well, the moons' pull is lax here, inattentive unlike back home and the people in the sea have been very helpful since I separated my associations from the local government. This has made some of my interactions with locals rather... tense. But I believe in this cause I am working towards, so I ask that even though you think me foolish, please believe in me as well.
— Signed Opheani Aiertz
it appears to be from a student of Nixsommer researching some sort of magical phenomena related to the moon. The reference to being watched and it reminding the student of her teacher seems to lend some credit to the theory that Nixsommer had some sort of natural mind reading ability. Unfortunately there isn't much evidence for who the "people in the sea" are, perhaps some sort of nautical nomad tribe that migrated farther south? It would explain why conversing with them would upset the "locals" nautical tribes having the typically unwarranted reputation of piracy and kidnaping.

Nixsommers Appearance

Nixsommer was considered a beautiful women, described as everything a noble could desire. Smooth, pale skin. Light colored eyes in an exotic shade of purple. Strong arms, graceful poise, and long, curly, flowing, dark auburn hair. Despite this few original pictures of Nixsommer remain. The only painting done by an artist who had seen her in person is from her late forties, a huge family portrait with her husband, children, and grandchildren. It is on record that other, earlier works of Nixsommer were done but their whereabouts have disappeared from knowledge. Perhaps a smiling old lady surrounded by her kin was how she wished to be remembered.
