The Greybright Sanatorium

The Greybright Sanatorium was built in the first decades after the walls of the City were erected, for the purpose of caring for those individuals whose health had been adversely affected by the Mist. It remains in operation and is a well-known landmark of the city, familiar to all. It is located near the center of the city as it is considered beneficial to the patients to be as far away from the Mist as possible.   The sanatorium cares for patients with a wide range of symptoms, from impaired vision and respiratory infections to severe afflictions of the nervous system and conditions of the mind. While the sanatorium doesn't generally charge patients for their stays, as the general operations are funded through taxes, certain treatments require the patient or someone affiliated with them to pay extra.   Patients may be checked in to the sanatorium of their own volition or, in the case of those who are guilty of crimes or are otherwise considered a danger to the public, may be forcibly committed.   In general, only commoners are treated at the sanatorium, as there are smaller clinics available for nobility with similar conditions.

Architecture

The sanatorium is a large, gray brick building with a slightly curved shape and a sizable garden walled off by a curving stone wall, making it reminiscent in shape to a small Steadfast. The left and right wings of the building house those patients who are expected to remain in the sanatorium indefinitely, whether because they are terminally ill or because their illness is incurable, as is the case with many conditions of the mind. The center part of the building houses patients whose condition is considered treatable and who are expected to leave once recovered.   Most patients are houses in communal rooms with everything from a couple to a dozen other patients with similar difficulties, though those whose families are able to may pay for a private room.   The garden consists of some areas for games and socializing as well as a fairly extensive hydroponic garden where some patients work during their stay. The sanatorium is particularly well-known for producing high-quality bell peppers.
