Gundrir Boll

The town that party starts in. At the end of the war, a wizard's dying breath was used to finish the spell that hastily raised the town, and in his honor, they renamed the town after him. Traders and scavengers from Gundrir Boll are always looking for scrap to reinforce the structure and magic users to maintain the glyphs holding the legs together. In the center of the dome, beneath the surface, the people have added a crude heating system, consisting of a furnace and am array of pipes, in order to combat the lack of natural heat.   Gundrir Boll is a rough dome-shaped hemisphere of earth atop a tripod of ramshackle legs. The Dome hangs, down toward the grass, leaving a flat surface for the town on top. Dead and dry roots poke out from the hemisphere of dirt, wrapping around and around to form a root ball. It totters across the plains, ambling along in search of resources. About 200 feet across and 50 feet high, the town is not large compared to many neighboring cities. Just off center from the surface of the town stands a massive, hollowed out and long-dead tree stump. It is nearly thirty feet tall, and fifteen feet in diameter. Like a great ancient chimney, the stump and the nearby crow's nest are the only things visible from the ground. Steps are cut down the stump, leading into the root ball holding the dome of earth. Several buildings sit atop the city, mostly cramped apartments around the small pasture for livestock and mounts, where the beasts are able to get some respite from the deadly grasses below. The only building of note in Gundrir Boll is the community center. It serves multiple duties, holding the mayor's office, crow's nest, and the tavern.   In the center of the dome, beneath the surface, sits a furnace and an array of pipes. Originally the town blacksmith's forge, the furnace powers the city's movement through unknown means. Over time, the residents added a web of pipes to pump heat to the surface all around the city, to fight against the biting cold of wind and winter.

Government

Every few years, the town has a mayoral election. Few people ever choose to run, so a write-in vote usually selects a reluctant mayor. The current mayor is a tiefling named Vanderbiek.

Defences

Using the heating system, the town can add bundles of materials to make colored smokes for signals or ceremonies and celebrations. The smoke bundles double as the town's only defense mechanism. When being hunted by dangerous animals or predatory cities, the furnace crew stuffs as many bundles as possible into the coals. Smoke billows out of the pipe caps, shrouding the city in a cloud of smoke much like the ink of an octopus. With the extra material burning, this also gives Gundrir Boll extra power for a burst of speed to escape. Usually, this is enough to flee the threat.

Industry & Trade

Like most cities, Gundrir Boll is a scavenger. The people collect what materials they can for trade and repairs. Its main good for outsiders is its lone tavern. Uthwyk, the bartender there, is able to use the heat from the core furnace to distill alcohol, a rare relief for weary nomads. He uses the alcohol (and its lip-loosening effects) to barter for scrap and information, such as loot stores, news, herd movements, or anything he can sell to the next customer.

History

Gundrir Boll was actually one of the first cities to go on the move, having been created just minutes before the apocalypse began. At the end of the war, a wizard named Gundrir Rosenthal used his dying breath to finish a spell that hastily raised the town. The spell took hold in the tree stump, pulling the entire root system up with the old town on top. Legs formed from nearby debris, and the city took its first lurching steps just as the wave of corrupted magic tore though the countryside. The surviving townspeople renamed the town after him.

Geography

Gundrir Boll'sm territory trends toward staying in the plains, usually southwest of the great Crescent mountain range.
