Vehicles of The Frozen North

The Frozen North is not a hospitible place. Having a suitable vehicle greatly improved chances of survival. Don't expect it to be cheap, though.

Husky Sled

The primary mode of transportation is by husky sled. This is the most reliable mode of transportation, but also the most expensive.   A husky sled is pulled by 8 huskies. With an average pull strength of 90 pounds (or ~41kg), this brings the total pull weight to 720 pounds (or ~327kg). This means that they can comfortable pull 3 average-built people with a good amount of supplies.   For short distance, but long duration missions, the advice is to hire halflings to travel back and forths with the sleds. This greatly reduces the amount of food needed to feed the huskies, allowing for more rations for the exploration party.

Pricing

In an attempt to be self-sufficient, Oghmania tries to source many of its resources locally. However, in the cold environment, very few resources are readily available. Instead, many materials are bought from traders coming through the portal. These materials come at a premium, because travel through the portal isn't free either.   All this translate into the prices that would-be adventurers have to pay for equipement, food and of course the husky sleds.
Item Price
Sled (down payment) 30 gp
Husky (down payment) 25 gp / husky (200 gp in total)
Husky and sled rent 5 gp / day
Husky rations (2 lbs) 2 cp / husky / day (16 cp / sled / day)
Rations (3 lbs) 8 cp / day / person
The sled and huskies are down payments, which upon the return of the undamaged sled and healthy huskies will be paid back.

Sailed sled

While the huskies are reliable and can go in any direction, the price is not for everybody. For those who still want a vehicle, there's the sailed sled. It's a basic contraption with a sail in the middle. It will go where the wind blows, which is an obvious drawback. But at least it doesn't require lots of food to continue going.   This sled costs 35 gp for a simple version or 70 gp for a bigger and sturdier version. It's made primarily out of wood. The simple version uses rope to keep everything together, making it lightweight and fast, but also easier to tumble over. The sturdier version has iron joints, with places to attach a tent for protection from the wind.
