Fulgorworm Species in Hoomanland | World Anvil

Fulgorworm

The Fulgorworm is a worm-like Abyssal fauna native to Reminia. They can be found near sources of energy, such as the reactors of the crashed colony ships. Their namesake comes from their ability to produce an electrical current throughout their bodies.

Basic Information

ANATOMY

Fulgorworms have a cylindrical body and their backs are covered in small hair-like bristles.

GENETICS AND REPRODUCTION

Clusters of Fulgorworms are birthed by Fulgor Broodworms, the queen-mothers of the species. A mature Broodworm can be identified by their huge size. Fulgor Broodworms will carry hundreds of eggs within her elongated body, providing essential nutrients and protection until they are ready to be released.
Once the eggs reach maturity, the Broodworm will expel them from her body into the surrounding environment. The resulting young will immediately seek out energy sources to sustain their growth. Most Fulgorworms will stay near their Broodworm for their entire life, until the energy source is depleted.
The only known Fulgor Broodworm in the Frxaken Rift is located within the wreckage of the HCS Solstice.

BEHAVIORS

Fulgorworms are generally neutral in nature, as long as they are feeding on a power source. If the source of power is removed or is depleted, the Fulgorworms will be driven into a hunger-induced frenzy and become extremely dangerous until they are able to acquire another power source.

GEOGRAPHIC ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

Before the introduction of the hooman colony ships, Fulgorworms were naturally found near thermal vents and other energy-producing sources.

DIETARY NEEDS AND HABITS

Fulgorworms feed on and ingest energy-rich materials, possessing specialized cells that allow them to harness the thermal and chemical energy from the source. Fulgorworms are immune to the effects of dangerous energy sources, such as high-heat thermal vents and ionized radiation. They will position themselves strategically near energy sources to absorb the optimal amount and sustain their growth.

By-products

Two by-products are produced from this diet: an electrical plasma that is stored in a special gland, which the worm can discharge when threatened, providing protection from potential predators.   The indigestible material that passes through the worm results in a heavy, hardened slag called vermium, depleted of its original energy content. The Reminian hoomans have found uses for vermium, including armor plating, radiation shielding, and anti-armor ammunition.
