The binary sun

the second sun in Honua's sky defines much of the long term weather patterns of the planet. The multi decade orbital period and high eccentricity causes several degrees of temperature shift in Honua's climate. This is enough to change the weather patterns of the planet, during perihelion monsoons and hurricanes ravage the planet. During the cooler part of the orbit, the temperature produces an "Arcadian paradise." It was this weather that attracted the initial investment.

History

Initial estimates of the effect the binary star would have on the weather of Honua was strongly minimized in the initial survey information. Independent estimates of the effect that the second sun's proximity would have on the planet were dismissed as alarmist. By the time that observational data proved the initial estimates fraudulent, over ten million people were on the planet. The following litigation against the company prevented them from investing in the planet's infrastructure enough to make it safe. Debate ranged about what to do for the people stuck on the planet, ultimately while some were evacuated, the Belkan-Am'Kar conflict consumed resources and left Honua on its own dealing with the changing weather.   The perfect storm, historically, isolated Honua a the exact moment it needed help. The first season was a chaotic time that resulted in many deaths and many changes in how the local power structures worked. Many of these changes would produce challenges after the Belkan-Am'Kar conflict and more attention was put to the population on Honua. Had either the conflict between the Belkan and the Am'Kar not diverted resources or that the initial colonization estimates were closer to correct, Honua might be well on its way to being a core world. As it is, it's a planet struggling to maintain humanity in the face of environmental changes caused by human shortsightedness and the long period binary star.
