Oheilion

The Bloodied Lord

Oheilion is a deity associated with the Heavenly Council and the progenitor of the goblinoid, orcish, and minotaur races. Though not a member of the Heavenly Council pantheon, Oheilion plays a crucial part in the mythology and cosmology of the Heavenly Council. According to the Heavenly Codex's account of the War of the Dawn, Oheilion was forged by eleven of the twelve gods of the Heavenly Council specifically to defeat the Great Old One Valdra. After Valdra's sealing within the Material Plane's Underdark, Oheilion was banished from the Heavenly Council, for they feared that he was nothing more than a cold instrument of destruction that could not be reasoned with or truly made good. To this day, most folk believe Oheilion resides in the shattered realm of the Fields of Maurenchali, where he waits until he is needed again during the Final Doom of the War of the Twilight.

Divine Domains

Oheilion is the god of war, combat, weaponry, armorers, weaponsmiths, soldiers, and glorious death on the field battle. He is the patron and progenitor of orcs, minotaurs, sahuagin, and the goblinoid races. His domain is War and Death.

Holy Books & Codes

Oheilion has no sacred text of his own. However, in the Heavenly Codex, he is a central character particularly in the "War of the Dawn," "the War of the Broken Day," and the "Book of the Twilight Prophecies."

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Oheilion's divine symbols are a crossed axe and sword covered in blood. His sacred colors are ash grey and sanguine red.

Tenets of Faith

  • Be ruthless upon the Field of Battle, but honorable once the blood is drained
  • Make Fear your advisor, not your master
  • Obey the Rule of War or be subject to its Atrocity
  • Give last rites to all soldiers, save those who turn traitor
  • Protect your own and your allies, lest you find yourself alone
  • Young Courage is more dangerous than Elder Caution
  • Intelligence and Strength are weapons of equal sharpness
  • Know the other Gods, for they will see to you when the Bloodied Lord cannot

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Oheilion has few known goals. He appears to be resigned to being the patron of those who fight in war, no matter the cost or reason. There is a melancholy to his inaction, as though he knows that when his name is invoked only suffering comes in its wake. But he remains a staunch divine, waiting within his realm of Maurenchali until the moment he will be summoned once more to face the Dread Dragoness and defeat her one final time.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Oheilion is usually depicted as a massive male figure with orcish features. He is often covered in his own blood, for the wounds he suffered in his battle with Valdra will never truly heal. He carries a greatsword made from sunforged steel and a greataxe made from the bones of a shadow dragon. They are called Lastspasm and Deathgasp.

Personal history

According to the Heavenly Codex's account of the War of the Dawn, Oheilion was the creation of eleven of the twelve gods of the Heavenly Council. After each of the gods of the Heavenly Council found ruination in fighting the Great Old One Valdra, they came together in a far away and inhospitable realm called Maurenchali to create a new being with all of their combined fury, strength, and bellicose natures to defeat the Dread Dragoness. Oheilion first dueled against Valdra's child, the god Kōs. Oheilion would have slain the Coiled Hermit but instead showed him mercy and the two became allies, or perhaps even romantic partners. Oheilion continued to battle against Valdra, with each wound he took resulting in the births of his progeny, the goblinoids, the orcs, and the minotaurs. First, he drew her away from the sacred peaks of the Celestial Mountains. Then he faced her in his homeland, the charred and broken fields of Maurenchali. Finally, Oheilion beat Valdra back into the crust of the mundane Material Plane long enough for the Council to bury her within the chasms and mazes of the Underdark itself, where she remains to this day.   Oheilion’s creation meant that upon Valdra's defeat, the god Kōs's soul was broken in a battle where the Shattered Straits now stand. Oheilion was overcome with grief and fury at the loss of his friend and partner, and his legions destroyed nearly everything in the Material Plane in anger. Little is known about this conflict, called by many the War of Broken Days. Only after a night with the goddess Lacorré did Oheilion change his ways. It took many years of training learn to control his bloodlust and to convince his children to end their onslaught, but he eventually succeeded and retired to the source of his origins, the Fields of Maurenchali. Now pacified and separated from their creator, the orcs, minotaurs, and goblinoids went out into the Material Plane hoping to forge a new life for themselves too, but found only hatred and fear. In our own time, they still struggle to move beyond their violent nature and forge relationships and communities among the other mortal races.   Those wanton wars that Ohielion's creation wages immediately after the War of the Dawn, coupled with the Bloodied Lord's refusal to take sides in conflicts divine and mundane has led him to be hated by the followers of the Heavenly Council. He remains at his seat in the charred fields of Maurenchali, waiting until a time of great strife and a worthy foe calls him forth for one final battle.   In the mythology of the giant's religion, the Ordning, the leader of the Heavenly Council Uriah⁣ and the giant god Jötu were the ones to create Oheilion. In this telling, the two mixed their seed and blood together and from their most masculine and aggressive essence sprang Oheilion, a warrior that could crush any foe. The Ordning also claims that upon sealing Valdra away, Oheilion crumbled into ash, his power spent and unable to be used again upon the coming Era of Twilight.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Oheilion was said to have nursed the Coiled Hermit Kōs back to health during the War of the Dawn. The two became close friends, allies, and even partners. To show his affection to the Bloodied Lord and his dedication to the Lord's cause, Kōs created the dragonborn, a hard and noble race of warriors.   Oheilion is said to have been calmed from his slaughter during the War of Broken Day by Lacorré, who shared his grief over the loss of Kōs. From their union, the sahuagin, a race of savage aquatic mortals was born. Lacorré was horrified of their foul nature, but Oheilion took them under his banner, as he does all savage creatures that know nothing of peace.   Oheilion's also created the orcs, the minotaurs, and the goblinoids. He made them to be his loyal foot soldiers in his battle with Valdra. After Kōs's shattering, they along with Oheilion went on to pillage and destroy much of the Material Plane. Finally, through Lacorré's intervention and Oheilion's mediation, they found peace and resolved to help rebuild the world. Yet upon returning to Holos, they were met with hatred and fear. Many returned to their old ways, particularly the goblins, who live such short, brutish lives they cannot help but act with savagery. But many formed communities no more warlike or brutish than any other mortal race. They still revere Oheilion and thank him for his teachings, though many have turned to other gods, as the Bloodied Lord's teachings are simple and offer little for a people seeking a life outside of battle.
